That's it.
No secret message.
No threat.
No gang connection.
Just three people he loved more than anything.
Suddenly, the tattoo looked completely different to me.
The same symbol that had been presented online as something frightening was, for my friend, a tiny tribute to his family.
And that's the lesson I took away from the whole thing.
Symbols can have histories. They can have cultural meanings. In certain contexts, they can even have associations with particular groups.
