Tips for getting rid of small insects in the bathroom

Have you ever noticed small black insects flying around the bathroom, and no matter how much you use insect repellent, you just can’t seem to get rid of them? Every year, when the weather gets warmer, these pesky flying insects start appearing in the bathroom. These tiny flying insects, commonly referred to as "fruit flies," thrive in stagnant water with decaying organic matter. They are also known as moth flies, which can be found on kitchen and bathroom walls. These insects are hairy, easy to carry bacteria, and they can infect food and spread diseases like E. coli.
The bathroom drainage system is often dark and humid, which makes it the ideal breeding ground for these tiny flying insects. They spread bacteria and tend to settle in many places, including everyday items like towels and toothbrushes in the bathroom. These items come into direct contact with our bo.dies and can pose health risks. So how can we deal with these insects? Today, I’ll share some easy ways to get rid of them using common household items.
Method 1: Using Ashes to Kill Insects
First, collect the leftover cigarette ash and soak it in water. Stir the mixture well to speed up the dissolving process. The nicotine and tar in the ash are very effective for killing insects or repelling mosquitoes. The soot in the ash also has good adsorption properties, which can help kill insect eggs.
Once the water turns yellow, pour the ash solution down the drain to kill insect eggs inside the pipes. Do this weekly to keep your house clean. Using cigarette ash in the pipes is a cost-effective and simple way to eliminate small insects.
Method 2: Using a Wet Cloth Around the Drain
Take a wet cloth and wrap it around the floor drain, then align the nozzle of the insecticide spray with the drain’s mouth. Spray a few times and ensure the wet cloth covers the area evenly. After spraying, keep the wet cloth in place for several hours to kill the insects inside the pipe. This is a practical method to eliminate insects.
Method 3: Pouring Hot Water Down the Drain
Prepare a pot of boiling water and pour it into the drain. This helps dissolve the grease and kill insect eggs. Next, prepare a container with about three tablespoons of rice flour and add two drops of dishwashing liquid. Mix them with the hot water, and pour it down the drain. The alkaline properties of the mixture will kill the eggs in the drain, and the cleaner will help unclog the pipes, preventing bad odors. After pouring the mixture down the drain, you’ll feel warmth coming from the drain. Wait for five minutes, then flush the pipes with boiling water again. Repeat this process once a month to ensure your bathroom remains free from small flying insects all summer long.
Other Ways to Prevent Small Insects:
1. Clean the Bathroom Regularly
If you have small flying insects in your bathroom, the first thing you need to do is clean the area thoroughly. Insects tend to hide and breed in damp and dirty spaces. By cleaning the bathroom frequently and removing potential food sources for insects, you can reduce the chances of them appearing. Check for any cracks in the walls, floor, or windows and seal them to prevent insects from entering the bathroom.
2. Install Insect Screens
A common solution to avoid insects is installing insect screens on doors and drains. Additionally, mechanical devices like fans and exhaust fans can help maintain airflow, reducing the presence of insects in the bathroom. Keeping the drainage system and septic tanks in good condition is essential for preventing mosquitoes and other insects from breeding in your bathroom.
3. Use Baking Soda, Salt, and Vinegar
These natural ingredients are excellent for clearing clogged drains. Similar to boiling water, the mixture cleans organic debris in the pipes and works deeper in the pipes. After letting the mixture sit overnight, flush the pipes with hot water. Regularly clearing the drains will prevent the appearance of insects in your home.
4. Use Insecticides
In some cases, using insecticides might be necessary to get rid of flying insects in the bathroom. However, it’s crucial to choose safe products that won’t harm human health or pets. Always read the product label carefully and follow the instructions. If you're not confident in handling the insecticide safely, you can contact professional pest control services for effective and safe solutions.
By combining these methods, you can easily control and prevent the appearance of insects in your bathroom, ensuring a healthy and comfortable living environment for your family.
