Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder that primarily affects older adults, causing widespread pain and stiffness in the muscles around the shoulders, neck, and hips. Although it is relatively common among people over the age of 50, many individuals mistake its symptoms for normal aging or arthritis. Early recognition is important because timely treatment can significantly improve quality of life and help prevent complications.

Chapter 1: What Is Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

Polymyalgia Rheumatica is an inflammatory condition that causes pain and stiffness, particularly in the shoulders and hips. The exact cause remains unknown, but researchers believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may contribute to its development.

The condition most commonly affects people over the age of 50, with the highest incidence occurring in those over 70. Women are affected more frequently than men. Symptoms often develop relatively quickly, sometimes appearing over a period of days or weeks rather than months.

The hallmark symptom of PMR is stiffness, especially in the morning. Many patients report difficulty getting out of bed, raising their arms, dressing, or performing routine daily activities. The stiffness typically lasts longer than 30 minutes after waking and may improve gradually as the day progresses.

In addition to pain in the shoulders, discomfort may spread to the neck, upper arms, buttocks, thighs, and lower back. Some individuals also experience fatigue, mild fever, loss of appetite, and unintended weight loss. Because these symptoms can resemble other medical conditions, obtaining an accurate diagnosis often requires a thorough medical evaluation.
