In these cases, dry mouth is often accompanied by additional symptoms that require medical attention.
Age can also be a factor. Although aging itself does not directly cause dry mouth, older adults are more likely to take medications and develop health conditions associated with reduced saliva production.
Persistent dry mouth should not be ignored. Over time, inadequate saliva can increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, mouth sores, and difficulty swallowing. Fortunately, several simple measures may help. Staying hydrated, limiting alcohol before bedtime, reducing caffeine intake, treating nasal congestion, maintaining good oral hygiene, and using a humidifier are all practical steps that may improve symptoms.
While occasional dry mouth is usually harmless, frequent symptoms may signal an underlying issue that deserves attention. Paying close attention to sleep habits, hydration levels, medications, and overall health can help identify the cause. If dry mouth persists for weeks, is accompanied by other symptoms, or begins affecting oral health and daily comfort, consulting a healthcare professional is recommended.
