Warning of potential d.a.n.gers when using an air fryer that anyone can make

Around 68% of people own an air fryer, but many are unaware of the potential risks, according to a recent survey in Express.

A new warning has been issued after insurers reported a rise in serious incidents involving air fryers, including house fires and major damage.

Aviva – one of the UK’s largest home insurers – said the number of claims for incidents involving air fryers is on the rise. Some fires have caused tens of thousands of pounds in damage.

In some cases, the air fryer has melted, collapsed and caught fire, setting the worktop on fire.

According to Aviva, the average payout for air fryer fires in 2024 will be £29,555, with the most serious cases costing up to £80,000.

A major fire has spread through the entire kitchen, destroying the ceiling, walls, cupboards, electrical appliances and even a TV.

Some fires are started by an air fryer being accidentally switched on while on the hob, causing it to overheat. ITV also reported a rare case where a hungry dog accidentally switched on the hob, causing the fryer to catch fire.

Users not following safety instructions

A survey commissioned by Aviva found that nearly one in five users (19%) had experienced a fire hazard, such as smoke, overheating or scorching.

The research also found that only 21% of users strictly followed the manufacturer's safety instructions. Some admitted to overstuffing the pot or using it in poorly ventilated spaces, such as cupboards.

Fire and explosion warnings expert

Luke Osborne, deputy technical director at Electrical Safety First, says air fryers have become a common kitchen appliance, but if not used properly, they can be dangerous.

He recommends:

✔ Always register your product with the manufacturer to be notified if there is a technical fault.

✔ Never overcrowd your air fryer.

✔ Do not plug your air fryer into an extension cord, as this can cause overheating.

✔ Make sure the power cord does not touch hot surfaces to avoid damage and fire.

✔ Clean your air fryer regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions to avoid a build-up of grease, which can ignite when cooking.

Key safety tips for using an air fryer:

🔹 Never leave your air fryer unattended.

🔹 Always place the fryer on a stable, non-flammable surface and in a well-ventilated area.

🔹 Avoid using too much oil, as this can cause smoke and increase the risk of fire.

🔹 Check the power cord and plug regularly for signs of damage.

🔹 Keep the fryer away from water to reduce the risk of electrical shock.

🔹 In the event of a fire, never pour water on it, instead use a suitable fire extinguisher or call the fire service immediately.

Aviva also reminds homeowners to check their insurance policy, as fires caused by electrical equipment can cause serious financial loss if not adequately covered.
