Chapter 2: Why Pilots Need Them
Power lines can be surprisingly difficult to spot, especially from a distance. Thin cables often blend into the background of the sky, mountains, water, or surrounding terrain.
This becomes particularly important for:
- Helicopter pilots
- Small aircraft operators
- Emergency medical flights
- Agricultural aircraft
- Search-and-rescue teams
During low-altitude operations, power lines can pose a significant hazard. Brightly colored marker balls increase visibility and help pilots identify the location of the cables well in advance.
The colors are carefully selected because they stand out under different weather and lighting conditions.
