Inspect the edges of exterior doors and windows. Replace damaged weather stripping, repair screens, and seal suitable gaps around pipes and cables.

Check the spaces where plumbing enters kitchen and bathroom cabinets. These areas are often overlooked because they are hidden from ordinary view.

In multi-unit buildings, coordinate with property management if cockroaches appear repeatedly. Treating one apartment may not solve the problem if insects continue entering from neighboring units or shared service areas.

Do not block ventilation openings or interfere with essential building systems when sealing gaps. Use appropriate materials and seek professional advice when necessary.

Preventing access is particularly important when cockroaches repeatedly appear near the same entrance or wall.

4. They May Be Coming From Drains and Plumbing Areas

Cockroaches are often associated with drains, sewers, and damp utility spaces, which has led many people to believe that every cockroach in a bathroom must have crawled up through the toilet or drain.

The reality is more complicated.

Some cockroach species are associated with sewer systems, outdoor drains, and other moist environments. These insects may enter buildings through gaps around pipes, damaged plumbing connections, or openings that connect indoor spaces to infested areas.

However, many common indoor cockroaches live and reproduce inside buildings. They may already be hiding in cupboards, behind appliances, or within wall and cabinet spaces rather than emerging from a drain.

Seeing a cockroach near a sink does not prove that it came through the plumbing.

If you repeatedly find cockroaches in a bathroom, inspect pipe openings, floor drains, plumbing cabinets, and any gaps around fixtures. Make sure drain covers and plumbing components are intact and functioning properly.

Keep drains reasonably clean, remove accumulated organic debris where accessible, and address leaks promptly.

If you suspect a problem with the sewer connection or building drainage, contact a qualified plumber or pest-control professional.

Avoid pouring bleach, insecticide, or other harsh chemicals into drains in an attempt to eliminate cockroaches. Such practices may be ineffective, damage plumbing, or create hazardous chemical exposure.

Identifying the actual entry route is more effective than assuming every bathroom sighting has the same cause.

5. Cardboard Boxes and Grocery Bags Can Bring Cockroaches Indoors

Sometimes cockroaches do not enter through a window, door, or drain. They arrive with something you bring into the house.

Cardboard boxes, grocery bags, delivery packaging, used furniture, secondhand appliances, and stored belongings can occasionally transport cockroaches or their egg cases.

This is especially relevant when items have been stored in warehouses, delivery areas, garages, or buildings with existing pest problems.

Cockroaches and their egg cases can be difficult to spot because they may be tucked into folds, seams, narrow gaps, or protected compartments.

For example, a cockroach may hide inside a cardboard box that has been stored in a damp area. When the box enters your home, the insect gains access to a new environment containing food, water, and shelter.

Used appliances and furniture can also conceal insects in areas that are not visible during a casual inspection.

When unpacking deliveries, inspect boxes if there are signs of pest activity. Dispose of unnecessary cardboard promptly rather than allowing it to accumulate in storage areas.

Before bringing secondhand furniture or appliances indoors, examine accessible joints, undersides, and compartments.

You do not need to become suspicious of every package. Most deliveries do not contain cockroaches. However, checking items from questionable storage environments can reduce the risk of accidentally introducing pests.

If cockroaches appear shortly after bringing a used appliance or piece of furniture into your home, inspect that item carefully and consider professional assistance if necessary.

6. Warm Weather Can Increase Cockroach Activity

Temperature influences the activity and development of many cockroach species.

Warm conditions can support faster development and greater activity when food, moisture, and suitable shelter are available. As a result, people may notice more cockroaches during warmer periods.

Rain can also influence where some outdoor species seek shelter. Heavy rainfall may disturb their usual hiding places, while changes in temperature or moisture can encourage movement into buildings.

However, weather alone does not explain every sudden appearance. Indoor species may remain active throughout the year when homes provide stable temperatures and sufficient resources.

If you begin seeing cockroaches more frequently during warm or rainy weather, inspect the exterior of your home as well as the interior.

Look for standing water, accumulated leaves, damp storage areas, rubbish containers, and gaps around doors.

Keep outdoor rubbish bins closed, maintain drainage around the building, and avoid allowing excessive debris to accumulate near entrances.
