Why do hands and feet sweat in winter?

We often think that excessive sweating only occurs when we engage in intense physical activity or are in a hot environment. However, some people experience sweaty hands and feet even in cold weather. So why does this happen? Let’s explore the causes and mechanisms behind sweaty hands and feet during winter.

Sweaty Hands and Feet in Winter

The human body has about 4 million sweat glands, with the forehead, armpits, palms, and soles being the areas with the highest concentration. Normally, we only sweat when we engage in physical activity or in hot weather. However, if your hands and feet sweat even in cold conditions, this is considered unusual.

Sweaty hands and feet in winter are an abnormal phenomenon.

What Causes Sweaty Hands and Feet in Winter?

The main cause of excessive sweating in the hands and feet during winter is overactive sympathetic nerves. These nerves send signals that cause blood vessels to constrict, making the hands and feet feel cold and clammy.

Overactive sympathetic nerves are the primary cause of sweating in cold weather.

In summer, the body naturally sweats more. But when winter arrives, sweating decreases, and the body must adjust to colder temperatures. This can trigger certain bodily responses. Additionally, excessive sweating in the extremities may also be linked to spleen deficiency with internal heat (from a Traditional Medicine perspective), weakened health, or chronic stress.

Tips to Reduce Sweating of Hands and Feet in Winter

Here are some helpful tips for those who experience excessive sweating in the hands and feet:

  • Use cotton balls soaked in alcohol to wipe your hands. This helps shrink pores and reduce sweat secretion. You can also replace alcohol with an aluminum chloride solution.

  • Boil 1 liter of water with 5 tea bags, let it cool, and soak your hands in the tea for about 30 minutes. Tannins in the tea have an astringent effect on the skin and work as a natural antiperspirant. Alternatively, you can hold a used tea bag in your hands for 10–15 minutes.

  • Use fresh Piper lolot (wild betel leaf) plants, especially mature ones. Wash them thoroughly and boil for about 15 minutes. Then, steam your hands and feet over the hot vapor. Once the water cools down a bit, soak your hands and feet in the warm water for about 30 minutes (once daily). This method is particularly helpful for mild sweating cases.

Piper lolot leaves can help relieve winter hand and foot sweating.

  • Soak your hands and feet in rock salt water. First, roast the rock salt in a pan until hot, then use the steam for hand and foot steaming. Wrap the hot salt in a cloth bag and apply it to your hands and feet.

These simple, natural methods can significantly reduce excessive sweating and are easy to try at home.

Sweaty hands and feet in winter can be uncomfortable and affect daily life. Based on the causes and mechanisms outlined, this condition is often related to overactive sympathetic nerves and the body’s temperature regulation in cold environments. To alleviate it, keeping the body warm during winter, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and properly caring for the skin of your hands and feet are effective approaches.
