Woman Di.es After Using Air Conditioner: Doctors Warn of a Critical Mistake Many People Make
A woman in China tragically di.ed after making a common but dangerous mistake while using the air conditioner during hot weather.
The incident involved Ms. Zhang Han (58 years old, China). According to Sohu News, on May 14, Ms. Zhang was rushed to the emergency room after she stopped breathing. Despite doctors’ efforts, she could not be revived.
What happened?
According to her family, at around 2 p.m. on May 14, Ms. Zhang returned home after shopping under the blazing sun. As soon as she got back, she immediately turned on the air conditioner to cool off and dry her sweat.
However, within just 10 minutes, she began to lose consciousness and collapsed. By the time her family found her and took her to the hospital, she was already in respiratory arrest.
Doctors confirmed that Ms. Zhang had suffered a stroke. They explained that the weather had reached peak summer temperatures, and Ms. Zhang had been outdoors between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. – the hottest part of the day. When she returned home, her body temperature was very high, but she turned on the air conditioner at a low setting to cool down quickly.
This caused a sudden and drastic temperature change, which the body could not adapt to fast enough. The result was sudden vasoconstriction – a narrowing of the blood vessels.
Why is this dangerous?
Sudden vasoconstriction can severely disrupt blood circulation. In mild cases, it may cause fatigue, dizziness, headaches, or lethargy. In severe cases, it can trigger irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest tightness, unconsciousness, coma – and even stroke or death.
Doctors warned that many people make the same mistake as Ms. Zhang: turning on the air conditioner at a very low temperature right after coming in from the heat. This habit poses serious health risks.
Doctor's Recommendation:
To avoid dangerous consequences like Ms. Zhang's, doctors advise the following:
-
Do NOT enter a cold, air-conditioned room immediately after being outside in the heat.
-
First, wipe off sweat and rest in a room with normal room temperature for a few minutes.
-
Once the body has cooled down naturally, you can enter an air-conditioned room.
-
Do not set the air conditioner too low. The recommended indoor temperature is 25–28°C (77–82°F) to avoid extreme temperature differences that shock the body.
Final advice from experts:
If someone shows unusual symptoms such as confusion, fainting, dizziness, prolonged imbalance, headaches, nausea, chest tightness, or breathing difficulties, seek medical attention immediately. These could be early warning signs of serious conditions like heatstroke or stroke, and early intervention could save lives.
