Many snakes consume rodents and other animals that people may consider pests.

Removing all snakes from an area is also unrealistic in many environments.

A better objective for most homeowners is not to create a completely wildlife-free property.

Instead, it is to create a garden where:

  • human activity and wildlife habitat are appropriately separated,
  • hiding places near homes are minimized,
  • food sources such as rodents are controlled,
  • vegetation is maintained,
  • and encounters are less likely to occur in high-traffic areas.

That is a much more practical approach.

A Simple Garden Checklist

If you are concerned about snakes around your home, walk through your property and ask yourself these questions:

Are shrubs touching the ground?

If branches create dense spaces underneath, consider selective pruning.

Is ground cover completely hiding the soil?

Open some areas around pathways and structures where appropriate.

Are tall grasses extremely dense?

Trim and maintain them regularly.

Are there piles of wood, branches, or unused materials?

Remove or reorganize anything unnecessary.

Is there a rodent problem?

Look for food sources, nesting areas, droppings, or structural openings.

Is birdseed scattered everywhere?

Clean up excess seed and store it securely.

Are trash containers accessible to animals?

Use secure lids.

Are sheds and garages sealed properly?

Check for gaps where rodents and other wildlife can enter.

Is vegetation growing directly against your home?

Maintain a manageable separation where practical.

Are there children or pets using the yard?
