Simple and Effective Tips for Cleaning Pillow Inserts

How to Wash Yellowed Cotton Pillow Inserts with Great Results

Most people focus only on washing pillowcases, bed sheets, and covers, often neglecting the pillow inserts. Many are unsure how to clean them properly.

Over time, pillow inserts can develop yellow stains, mold, and even unpleasant odors. While pillowcases and bedding are regularly changed and washed, pillow inserts also require cleaning, as they directly affect your skin, breathing, and overall sleep quality.

Effective Methods for Cleaning Pillow Inserts

To clean your pillow inserts, you can try the following methods:

Using Detergent and Warm Water

Mix detergent with warm water in a 1:4 ratio. Soak the pillow inserts in this solution for 30-40 minutes, then place them in a washing machine for thorough cleaning.

Using Vinegar

Vinegar is an effective and safe way to remove stains. Prepare 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide, and 1 tablespoon of detergent. Dissolve the detergent in water and soak the pillow inserts for 10 minutes. Then add hydrogen peroxide and vinegar, soak for another 5 minutes, and machine wash.

Using Borax and Bleach Solution

Prepare 1 capful of detergent, 1 cup of dishwashing liquid, 1 cup of clothing bleach, 1/2 cup of borax, and hot water. Mix everything and soak the pillow inserts for 10 minutes. Gently squeeze the pillows to remove dirt, repeating until they are clean. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Using Baking Soda

Mix 100g of baking soda with 500ml of warm water, 1 capful of detergent, and juice from one lemon or 100ml of white vinegar. Soak the pillow inserts for 15-20 minutes, then rinse them gently in warm water. Rinse multiple times to remove stains and baking soda residue. Important Tips for Cleaning Pillow Inserts Avoid using harsh cleaning agents to prevent damage to the inserts. Wash and dry the pillow inserts on sunny days. Do not expose them to direct sunlight; instead, dry them in the shade to prevent discoloration and reduce quality degradation. Do not dry pillow inserts at excessively high temperatures. Ensure the inserts are completely dry before use, as damp inserts can lead to mold growth. If the inserts have been in use for a long time, consider replacing them, as their quality deteriorates over time, and cleaning may no longer be effective.
