Remove condensation from windows
The Wonder Hack: Using a Household Item
One of the easiest and most effective ways to combat window condensation involves the use of cat litter or silica gel, both of which are excellent at absorbing moisture from the air. Here’s how it works:
What You Need
- A pair of clean, old socks or a small breathable cloth bag.
- A handful of cat litter (specifically the type designed to absorb moisture) or silica gel packets.
Steps to Follow
- Fill the Sock or Bag: Take one of the socks or a small bag and fill it with cat litter or silica gel. These materials are highly absorbent and will help draw moisture from the surrounding air.
- Tie It Securely: Tie the open end of the sock or bag tightly to prevent the contents from spilling.
- Place Near Windows: Position the sock or bag on the window sill, especially in areas where condensation frequently forms. You can also place them near other problem spots, such as sliding glass doors or in vehicles.
- Replace as Needed: Check the sock or bag regularly and replace the contents once they become saturated with moisture.
Why This Hack Works
Cat litter and silica gel are designed to absorb moisture efficiently. Cat litter, in particular, is inexpensive and widely available. By reducing the moisture in the air around your windows, this method prevents condensation from forming in the first place.
Other Tips to Prevent Window Condensation
While the "wonder hack" is a fantastic quick fix, you can take additional steps to address the root causes of window condensation:
-
Improve Ventilation:
- Open windows for short periods to allow fresh air to circulate.
- Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to reduce humidity levels.
-
Control Indoor Humidity:
- Use a dehumidifier to maintain optimal indoor humidity levels (between 30–50%).
- Avoid drying clothes indoors, as this releases large amounts of moisture into the air.
-
Insulate Windows:
- Install double-glazed windows or use window insulation film to reduce the temperature difference between the glass and indoor air.
- Seal any gaps or cracks around the windows to prevent cold air from entering.
-
Wipe Down Windows:
- Use a microfiber cloth or squeegee to remove condensation as soon as it appears to prevent mold growth and water damage.
