Although the Smartkey is a fairly effective anti-theft device, it is not flawless.
Specifically, malicious individuals still have methods to unlock cars and motorcycles without the Smartkey.
This is because most Smartkeys come with a feature that automatically unlocks the vehicle when nearby – perpetrators can utilize a signal booster device to extend the wireless signal from the Smartkey on your person.
Car manufacturers have sought to address this vulnerability by implementing motion sensors within the Smartkey – if it remains in one position for an extended period, the wireless signal will shut off. However, some car models lack this feature, and it’s not applied to motorcycles.
To minimize this risk, you can follow these three suggestions:
- Keep the Smartkey as far away from the car or motorcycle as possible.
- Some Smartkey types have a button to manually disable the key buttons. Regularly do this when you don’t need to use the vehicle, such as during the night.
- Place the Smartkey in a steel candy box or a cookie tin to block the wireless signal.
Furthermore, here are some general anti-theft tips you can implement:
- Install additional physical locks such as steering wheel locks, handbrake locks, or throttle locks (for cars), wheel locks (for motorcycles), etc. Visible installation of these devices may deter potential thieves.
- Add extra anti-theft devices.
- Install lights or motion-detecting cameras in your parking spots – they not only help reduce the risk of theft but also provide evidence to authorities in case of a theft incident.
- Install a tracking system so that if your vehicle is stolen, you can track its location.
- If you have a garage or a designated parking spot (for cars) or indoor space (for motorcycles), park your vehicle there. Intruders are less likely to risk entering these areas.
