For whatever reason, some people tend to think that embroidery is a hobby that’s strictly reserved to grandmothers who want to decorate old pillowcases and tablecloths. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In reality, embroidery is often used to create impressive pieces of art, and the works of Megan Zaniewski are the perfect proof. The artist creates stunning embroideries of animals submerged in water, and the amount of detail that goes into her works will leave you amazed.

When asked why she chose to mostly embroider animals, Megan explained that it was because her children are very fascinated by the natural world and the family spends a lot of time outdoors together. “I love how they view the natural world, particularly animals, with such wonder,” explained the artist. “Their curiosity and awe inspire me to embroider animal subjects in ways that impart that same child-like fascination to my audience.”

The artist has been creating embroideries for the past two years

When creating her embroideries, Megan usually picks commonly recognizable species because she believes they’re the animal ambassadors to the natural world for a lot of people. “I also really enjoy embroidering less commonly known species, though, because it gives me a chance to learn more about these creatures and share a bit of that knowledge and beauty with others,” added the artist.

Both Megan’s mother and grandmother were skilled needleworkers, and that’s how she got into the hobby herself

Of course, such intricate works take quite a bit of time to complete. While the miniature ones take the artist between two and three hours, larger ones can take up to 25!

Megan also added that the technique she specializes in is called threadpainting or needlepainting, as well as a 3-dimensional technique called stumpwork.
