Sickening footage shows a German shepherd’s eyes watering after its owner fed it a spicy meal in a live-stream.
In the clip, tears can be seen dropping from the dog’s eyes as it unwittingly wolfs down the dish, which looks as though it may be some sort of chilli. The Daily Mail reports that it is a bowl of La Zi Ji, or Chongqing Chilli Chicken, a regional dish known for its extremely spicy flavours.
Worryingly, the video is part of a trend sweeping social media in China which sees dog owners film their pets eating excessive amounts of a variety of different foods. In extreme cases, pooches are fed harmful foods against their will.
One clip sees an owner slip whole chillies in a husky’s mouth, while another shows a person holding open a husky’s mouth (possibly the same one) and pouring popping candy down it.
Another video sees two dogs ‘challenged’ to eat 38 different varieties of inappropriate snacks and sweets.
A husky was force-fed chillies as part of the trend.

It seems the trend has emerged as a sort of protest after the Chinese government launched ‘Operation Empty Plate’ in a bid to tackle food waste. As part of this, there has been a crackdown on ‘Chibo’ videos.
The popular South Korean trend, which loosely translates as ‘eating broadcast’, sees people eat vast quantities of food on a live-stream. Now that it’s banned, people are circumnavigating this by getting their dogs involved; why some feel the need to turn things nasty with chillies and popping candy, I do not know.
President Xi Jinping launched Operation Empty Plate last month amid a food shortage in the country. He said the amount of food that goes to waste in the country is ‘shocking and distressing’ and people have been urged to order one plate less than the number of diners when eating out – dubbed the ‘N-1’ system.
The Chinese government is trying to crack down on food waste.
According to state news agency Xinhua, Jinping said: “Waste is shameful and thriftiness is honourable.
“Who knows that of our meal in the dish, every grain comes after hard toil? We should still maintain a sense of crisis about food security. The impact of this year’s Covid-19 pandemic has sounded the alarm.”
The N-1 system hasn’t been warmly welcomed though, as in China it is custom to order more food than is needed, with empty plates often seen as a sign of bad hosting. What’s more, many people feel the policy will hit the poorest the hardest.
