3 changes in your tongue that show you're getting older

3 Changes in Your Tongue That Indicate You're Aging

  1. Loss of the tongue's papillae:
As we age, the papillae (tiny hair-like structures) on the tongue may gradually disappear, making the surface of the tongue smooth and shiny. These papillae help keep the tongue moist, protect it, and support taste sensations. The loss of papillae can reduce the ability to taste and lead to dry mouth.

  2. Cracks in the tongue:
With age, the tongue may develop cracks or deep grooves, especially in the middle area. This is a sign of decreased function of the tissues in the tongue and may be related to changes in saliva production or digestive issues.

  3. Change in color:
The tongue may change color as you age, particularly turning pale or developing white or red spots. This could be linked to health conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, reduced blood circulation, or tongue-related diseases like glossitis.

These changes can be a normal part of aging, but if you notice any unusual changes on your tongue, it’s important to consult a doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
