Caution! 3 Groups of People Should Stay Away from Perilla Leaf Water

The Benefits of Perilla Leaf Water

Many people have the habit of boiling perilla leaves to drink because of their health benefits. According to VietNamNet, quoting herbalist Bui Dac Sang from the Hanoi Oriental Medicine Association, perilla leaves are not only a culinary herb used in dishes but also a traditional remedy for various ailments.

In traditional medicine, perilla has a pungent taste and warm nature, helping to dispel cold, promote the circulation of vital energy, eliminate phlegm, nourish the lungs, ease asthma attacks, prevent miscarriage, detoxify the body, and treat snake bites.

Modern medical research shows that this plant contains many volatile oils, amino acids, iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin C, and more. Perilla seeds (known as tô tử) contain linoleic acid and vitamin B.

Particularly, the alpha-linolenic acid found in perilla oil is mostly converted in the body into docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a fundamental component of the brain’s nervous system. It helps improve conditions such as atopic dermatitis, bronchitis, indigestion, anemia, and colds.

Perilla can be consumed daily, added to various dishes, or boiled like tea to drink.

When used properly, perilla leaf water is very beneficial for health.

When boiled as a drink, the compounds in perilla leaves help reduce allergic reactions such as dermatitis and rhinitis. Perilla promotes skin blood vessel dilation, stimulates sweat gland nerves, induces sweating, and reduces bronchial spasms.

This fragrant herb is rich in iron and vitamin C, which play a role in preventing anemia. Drinking perilla water also helps ward off colds and warms the lungs.

People who experience chills, mild fevers, or nasal congestion may find relief by drinking perilla water. It is also suitable for certain gastrointestinal infections.

Who Should Not Drink Perilla Leaf Water

Although perilla leaf water has many health benefits, it is not suitable for everyone.

According to Suc Khoe & Doi Song (Health & Life Newspaper), quoting herbalist Tran Dang Tai — Vice President of the Oriental Medicine Association of Thai Hoa Town, Nghe An — the following groups should avoid drinking perilla leaf water:

Pregnant Women

Traditionally, people believed drinking perilla water could make childbirth easier. However, recent studies warn that no scientific evidence supports this claim, and it may even have negative effects.

Pregnant women naturally have higher body heat than normal. Long-term use of perilla leaves may raise blood pressure. Overconsumption can also cause fatigue, dizziness, constipation, and dark urine.

Pregnant women may drink perilla water to help relieve colds, but the dosage should be guided by a doctor.

People with “Hot” Colds (Heat-Type Illnesses)

In traditional medicine, perilla has a pungent and warmnature. Therefore, those suffering from heat-related illnesses should be cautious, as perilla can make the body feel more uncomfortable and restless.

People Allergic to Perilla

Some individuals may be allergic to perilla leaves without realizing it. Hence, caution is needed when using them. Additionally, it is important to ensure the perilla purchased is clean and free of chemicals to protect health.
