Common foods you should limit storing in the fridge — and why

omatoes, potatoes, bananas… are among the foods we should limit storing in the refrigerator.

Proper food storage helps extend the shelf life of foods, especially when it comes to maintaining the right refrigerator temperature. However, not all foods should be kept in the fridge, as the cold temperature can significantly reduce the quality, flavor, and color of certain items. Dr. Preet Pal Thakur, co-founder of Glamyo Health, shares some foods that should not be stored in the refrigerator:

Tomatoes

When stored in the refrigerator, tomatoes quickly lose their flavor and aroma. Being a type of juicy fruit with high water content, tomatoes are better preserved in warmer places outside the fridge.

Potatoes

Cold temperatures can cause the starch in potatoes to break down, making them taste sweet and grainy. Therefore, it’s best to store potatoes in a cool, dark place outside the refrigerator, where their quality can be better maintained.

Bananas

When bananas are stored in the refrigerator, they stop ripening. To ripen properly, bananas need warmer temperatures — around 15–20°C (59–68°F).

Coffee

Coffee loses its distinct aroma and flavor when kept in the refrigerator. Moreover, ground coffee can easily absorb odors from other foods stored inside the fridge.

Honey

Refrigerating honey can dull its flavor. It’s best to store honey in a dry, cool place such as a cupboard or kitchen shelf to preserve its natural aroma and taste.
