Drinking This in the Morning Is Better Than Ginseng or Bird’s Nest: A Natural Way to Cool the Li.ver

You can replace plain water in the morning with the following drink, which is also very beneficial for your health.

According to Tổ Quốc newspaper, brown rice is a familiar staple in many Vietnamese households. Besides eating brown rice, drinking roasted brown rice water daily is a lesser-known but highly beneficial health practice. According to nutritionists, consuming this beverage in the morning—especially about 30 minutes after breakfast—can help start your day strong and bring the following health benefits:

1. Lowers Blood Sugar

Roasted brown rice water is beneficial for people with diabetes. It can help reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin synthesis in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The antioxidants and phytochemicals found in brown rice play an important role in glucose metabolism, helping to regulate and control blood sugar levels. Brown rice also has a lower glycemic index than white rice and is higher in fiber and protein, which helps prevent blood sugar spikes after meals.

Although this drink is good for health, it should not completely replace plain water. Diabetics should avoid overconsumption.

2. Good for the Liver

Brown rice is a nutritious grain that’s particularly good for liver health. When ground and brewed into a cooling drink, it helps detoxify and protect the liver due to its high antioxidant content, which fights free radicals and reduces the risk of liver damage. Its cholesterol-lowering effect also supports liver function and may reduce the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

According to American doctor Renée Welhouse, patients with cirrhosis who regularly drank brown rice water showed significant blood detoxification effects.

3. Supports Kidney Health

Brown rice contains more protein, fat, and vitamins than white rice, making it beneficial for the kidneys. Its fiber helps prevent the formation of oxalates—the main cause of kidney stones. Additionally, the antioxidants, vitamins, and magnesium in brown rice help neutralize uric acid levels in the blood, reducing the risk of kidney stones. Regularly drinking brown rice water can help the body flush out toxins and salts more effectively.

4. Improves Vision

This drink is also good for eye health. Brown rice contains beneficial fatty acids like omega-3, folic acid, and gluten that help improve vision and keep your eyes bright and healthy. Lutein and zeaxanthin in brown rice also protect against macular degeneration and cataracts.

5. Boosts Heart Health

Research has shown that certain nutrients in brown rice—such as fiber, carotenoids, phytosterols, omega-3, and IP6—play key roles in platelet regulation, reducing cholesterol, and promoting fat and acid excretion. These effects help prevent cardiovascular disease and complications.

Additionally, the magnesium and potassium in brown rice protect blood vessels and prevent fat buildup along the arterial walls, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. Incorporating brown rice or its water into your diet is an effective way to support heart health.

6. Strengthens Bones

Roasted brown rice water is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin K, which are essential for transporting calcium from the blood into the bones. IP6 in brown rice also prevents calcium oxalate crystal formation in the urinary tract. Adding this drink to your daily routine can help keep bones and joints strong.

7. Improves Skin Health

The antioxidants in brown rice bran help combat skin aging by reducing wrinkles and improving skin elasticity. Drinking roasted brown rice water regularly may help you look younger and more radiant.

Usage Tips:

To get the most benefit from this drink, don’t leave it sitting for days—it spoils easily. It's best to brew fresh roasted brown rice water daily. For most people, 1–2 liters per day is enough. People who are underweight or weak should avoid drinking it frequently.

Who Should Avoid Drinking Roasted Brown Rice Water?

According to herbalist Vũ Quốc Trung from the Hanoi Traditional Medicine Association, although roasted brown rice water is popular for cooling the body in hot summer months, it should not be overused.

People with cold stomachs or frequent loose stools should be cautious with cooling foods and drinks. Also, it should not be used to completely replace plain drinking water.

As shared by Dr. Doãn Thị Tường Vi (former Head of Nutrition at Hospital 198), brown rice is rich in B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, iron, and fiber. Roasted brown rice water helps prevent constipation and improves digestion.

However, Dr. Vi also advises that children, people who are underweight or frail, and pregnant women should limit their intake to avoid adverse effects on their health.
