The Lawson family portrait, taken shortly before one of the most horrific crimes of the 20th century in the United States, has since become the stuff of nightmares.

The Lawsons were a working-class family from rural North Carolina, headed by Charlie Lawson (born 1886), a farmer, and his wife Fannie Lawson (born 1897). Together, they had seven children after losing one in infancy: Arthur (19), Marie (17), Carrie (12), Maybell (7), James (4), Raymond (2), and baby Mary Lou (4 months).

Shortly before Christmas 1929, Charlie took his family into town to buy new clothes and have a formal family portrait taken. This was an unusual and expensive gesture for a farming family at the time. Years later, many came to view that photo as a dark omen. The website AllThatsInteresting.com even called it “a strong contender for the scariest photograph ever taken.”

In the black-and-white studio portrait taken in nearby Winston-Salem, the Lawsons stand stiffly in formal attire, gazing blankly into the camera. Charlie’s stern, expressionless face gives the faintest hint of what was to come.

Christmas Day Massacre

On Christmas Day, Charlie began his killing spree. First, he murdered his daughters Carrie and Maybell near a tobacco barn as they walked to visit relatives. He then returned home and shot his wife Fannie on the porch. Entering the house, he killed Marie, followed by his two youngest sons, James and Raymond. Lastly, he bludgeoned baby Mary Lou to death.

After murdering seven members of his family, Charlie walked into the woods and took his own life with a shotgun. His eldest son, Arthur, survived — the only one. That morning, Charlie had taken Arthur hunting and sent him into town to buy more ammunition. Arthur lived a quiet life after the tragedy, haunted by the horrific loss of his family.

Endless Theories, No Clear Motive

While historians generally consider the motive unsolved, some believe Charlie suffered from mental illness or head trauma.

Jeff Cochran, screenwriter of the documentary Trouble Will Cause, told Yes Weekly in 2018:

“It was an especially brutal murder, and I think the main reason it has haunted so many people for so long is that no one really knows why Charlie Lawson killed his family.”

“People have come up with dozens of theories and explanations. Some are wild and far-fetched, but most are logically possible. I think many of these theories exist simply because people need to make sense of something so senseless. They see this horrific, pointless massacre and think: there must be a horrifying explanation to match.”

Today, the Lawson family portrait remains a chilling reminder that appearances can be deceiving — and that behind even the most ordinary images can lie unimaginable darkness.
