Seven indicators that your kidneys are functioning well—check

Your kidneys are vital organs that play a key role in filtering waste, balancing fluids, and regulating essential bodily functions. However, kidney function can often go unnoticed until problems arise. Fortunately, there are some signs and indicators that can suggest your kidneys are functioning well. Here are seven indicators to check for kidney health:

1. Healthy Urination Patterns

  • Normal Urination Frequency: If you’re urinating around 6–8 times per day, it typically indicates that your kidneys are functioning well and regulating fluid balance properly.
  • Clear, Pale Yellow Urine: Healthy kidneys usually produce urine that is clear to pale yellow, indicating good hydration and efficient filtration. Dark or cloudy urine may suggest dehydration or infection.
  • No Pain or Discomfort: When urinating, you should feel no pain, burning, or discomfort. If you do, it could be a sign of kidney or urinary tract issues.

2. Stable Blood Pressure

  • Normal Blood Pressure: Healthy kidneys help regulate blood pressure by managing the balance of salt and water in the body. Normal blood pressure is around 120/80 mmHg.
  • Consistent Readings: If your blood pressure stays consistently within a healthy range, it suggests your kidneys are doing their job well in managing fluid and sodium.

3. No Swelling or Edema

  • Absence of Swelling: When kidneys are functioning properly, they help remove excess salt and fluid from the body. If your kidneys are healthy, you shouldn't experience swelling, particularly in the feet, ankles, hands, or face.
  • No Puffiness: If your kidneys are not working well, excess fluid can build up in the body, leading to noticeable puffiness.

4. Healthy Skin Appearance

  • Clear and Smooth Skin: Healthy kidneys help maintain a proper balance of waste and fluids in the body. When they function well, your skin is likely to remain clear and smooth.
  • No Persistent Itching: Chronic itching can be a sign of kidney problems, particularly if your kidneys aren’t properly filtering waste. A healthy kidney function will usually mean no itching due to waste buildup.

5. Normal Energy Levels

  • Consistent Energy: Healthy kidneys produce erythropoietin, a hormone that helps produce red blood cells. This allows your body to maintain normal energy levels.
  • No Fatigue: Feeling consistently tired or fatigued, despite good sleep, could indicate that your kidneys are not working properly, especially if anemia or other issues develop.

6. Good Appetite and Digestion

  • Healthy Appetite: Proper kidney function helps regulate waste, which can affect digestion and appetite. When kidneys are functioning optimally, you should have a healthy appetite without experiencing nausea or food aversions.
  • No Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant unexplained weight loss or a loss of appetite can be a sign that kidney function is impaired.

7. No Unusual Back or Side Pain

  • No Pain in Kidney Area: The kidneys are located at the lower back, just below the rib cage. If you are not experiencing any sharp, chronic, or dull pain in your lower back or sides, it’s a good indication that your kidneys are functioning well.
  • No Pain When Lying Down: Kidney problems can sometimes cause pain or discomfort in the back when lying down, so the absence of such pain is another sign that your kidneys are healthy.
