The circulatory system delivers oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. When circulation becomes impaired, the feet may receive less blood flow, causing them to feel unusually cold.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is one condition that can reduce circulation to the legs and feet. PAD occurs when arteries become narrowed due to plaque buildup, limiting blood flow.

People with circulation problems may also notice:

  • Leg discomfort while walking
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Changes in skin color
  • Reduced hair growth on the legs
  • Weak pulses in the feet

Smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels are among the factors that increase the risk of circulation-related problems.

Changes in Nail Color

Toenails can reveal more than many people realize.

Healthy nails are typically smooth, relatively uniform in color, and free of major deformities. Changes in nail appearance can occur for harmless reasons, such as minor injuries or aging, but they can sometimes point toward underlying health issues.

One example is discoloration.

Yellow nails may occasionally be associated with fungal infections, which are particularly common in older adults. Fungal infections can cause nails to become thickened, brittle, and difficult to trim.

Bluish nails may indicate that tissues are not receiving enough oxygen. Although this symptom can have several causes, persistent blue discoloration deserves medical attention.

Dark streaks, unusual spots, or significant changes in nail appearance should also be evaluated, especially when they develop without a clear explanation.

The photograph shown in the original article highlights discoloration around the big toe. While images alone cannot determine a diagnosis, visible changes in nail color are often among the reasons people seek medical advice.
