Changes in Skin Color

Skin color changes may also provide useful clues.

Pale skin can sometimes indicate reduced blood flow.

Redness may develop because of irritation, inflammation, infection, injury, or certain vascular conditions.

Purple or bluish coloration may suggest circulation problems or reduced oxygen delivery.

In some cases, people notice patchy discoloration that appears suddenly or gradually spreads.

Although many color changes have harmless explanations, persistent or unexplained changes should not be ignored, particularly when accompanied by pain, swelling, numbness, or temperature differences between the feet.

Cracked Heels and Extremely Dry Skin

Dry skin is extremely common.

Cold weather, aging, frequent bathing, low humidity, and certain soaps can all contribute to dryness.

However, severe cracking may sometimes signal more than a cosmetic issue.

Some endocrine disorders, nutritional deficiencies, and chronic skin conditions can contribute to persistent dryness.

Deep cracks can also increase the risk of infection because they create openings in the skin barrier.
