Many early signs of liver cancer are often mistaken for common illnesses.

The liver is the body’s “chemical factory,” responsible for hundreds of vital functions — from filtering blood and detoxifying to storing energy and aiding digestion. However, when cancer attacks this organ, all these processes begin to silently break down. Unlike many other cancers, liver cancer often progresses quietly, rarely showing clear symptoms in its early stages. This is why most patients are diagnosed only when the disease has reached an advanced phase.

According to Dr. Gowri Kulkarni, Head of Medical Services at MediBuddy (a leading online doctor consultation platform in India), the liver can suffer significant damage while patients still “feel almost normal.” Therefore, recognizing the warning signs early is key to timely intervention and saving lives.

The 6 Early Warning Signs of Liver Cancer

According to The Times of India, the most common early signs include:

1. Pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen
One of the most frequent symptoms of liver cancer is a dull ache or heaviness in the upper right abdomen, sometimes spreading to the back or right shoulder. Patients may feel persistent discomfort or fullness. Because this symptom resembles digestive problems like bloating, gastritis, or indigestion, it’s often ignored — delaying diagnosis.

2. Loss of appetite
A reduced desire to eat is another early warning sign. As tumors grow, metabolic and liver function changes cause a constant feeling of fullness, even before eating. Persistent loss of appetite without clear cause warrants medical attention, as it may indicate liver dysfunction.

3. Unexplained weight loss
Sudden weight loss without changes in diet or activity levels can signal early liver cancer. As cancer cells multiply, the body’s metabolism becomes disrupted, leading to loss of muscle mass and energy. Doctors recommend monitoring unexpected weight changes, especially rapid weight loss, and getting necessary tests done.

4. Persistent fatigue and weakness
While many people attribute fatigue to stress, overwork, or lack of sleep, prolonged exhaustion can indicate poor liver performance. When the liver fails to metabolize nutrients and remove toxins properly, the body becomes weak and drained. If fatigue doesn’t improve despite adequate rest, a liver function test is recommended.

5. Abdominal swelling or bloating
Some liver cancer patients experience swelling or bloating due to fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites). This occurs when tumors block blood flow or impair liver function. If bloating occurs with pain, weight loss, or fatigue, it may signal serious liver disease and should be checked promptly.

6. Jaundice
Yellowing of the skin or eyes is a classic symptom of liver dysfunction. When the liver can no longer process bilirubin — a yellow pigment formed during red blood cell breakdown — it accumulates in the blood, turning the eyes and skin yellow. Dark urine, pale stools, and itching may accompany this symptom. Jaundice usually indicates severe liver damage requiring immediate treatment.

Early Detection Can Change the Outcome

Dr. Kulkarni emphasizes that most of these symptoms are mild at first and easy to miss. However, early detection makes a critical difference in treatment success.

People at higher risk — including those with chronic hepatitis B or C, heavy alcohol use, obesity, or fatty liver disease — should undergo regular liver ultrasound and function tests.

“Recognizing the warning signs early, acting quickly, and maintaining regular health checkups are the keys to protecting your liver,” Dr. Kulkarni said. “Liver cancer doesn’t always make noise — but when it finally does, it’s often too late.”
