The Easiest Way to Make Coconut Oil at Home

Making coconut oil at home is simpler than most people think. With just a few fresh coconuts and basic kitchen tools, you can create pure, chemical-free coconut oil for cooking, skincare, or hair care. Below is the easiest method - often called the cold-press (wet-milling) method - that preserves the natural aroma and nutrients of the coconut.

Ingredients & Tools

  • 2–3 mature coconuts

  • Warm water

  • Blender or grater

  • Fine strainer or cheesecloth

  • Bowl

  • A clean jar for storage

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Coconut

Break the coconuts open and drain the coconut water. Remove the white coconut meat from the shell, then wash it thoroughly.

2. Blend Into Coconut Milk

Cut the coconut meat into small pieces and place them in a blender. Add warm water—just enough to help the blender work smoothly. Blend until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.

3. Extract the Coconut Milk

Pour the blended mixture through a fine strainer or cheesecloth into a bowl. Squeeze firmly to extract as much coconut milk as possible.
(You can repeat the blending with a bit more warm water to get more milk.)

4. Let the Coconut Milk Separate

Cover the bowl and leave it at room temperature for 12–24 hours. Over time, the coconut milk will separate into two layers:

  • Top layer: thick coconut cream

  • Bottom layer: clear liquid

The oil will form inside the cream.

5. Collect the Coconut Cream

Spoon off the thick cream layer into a pan.

6. Heat to Release the Oil

Warm the cream over low heat. Stir occasionally until the cream begins to curdle and release oil. Continue heating until the oil separates completely and the solids turn light brown.

7. Strain the Oil

Allow it to cool slightly, then strain the oil through a cheesecloth to remove any remaining solids.

8. Store the Coconut Oil

Pour the pure oil into a clean glass jar. Let it cool fully before sealing.
Homemade coconut oil can last up to several months if stored in a cool, dry place.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use fully mature coconuts - they produce more oil.

  • Keep heat low to preserve nutrients.

  • If the oil solidifies slightly in cool weather, this is normal.
