Touch Your Two Index Fingers Together to Check for a Possible War.ning Sign of Lu.ng Can.cer

A Simple Two-Finger Test May Indicate Whether You Could Be at Risk

As lung cancer becomes increasingly common worldwide, many people are looking for ways to recognize potential warning signs as early as possible.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), North America, Europe, and East Asia have some of the highest rates of lung cancer in the world. Vietnam is also among the countries significantly affected by this disease. Research suggests that up to 80% of lung cancer cases are linked to environmental factors, diet, smoking habits, workplace exposures, and air or water pollution.

Globally, approximately 2.09 million new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year, and about 1.76 million people die from the disease annually. In Vietnam, more than 23,000 new cases were reported in 2018 alone. Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths, particularly among men.

The "Diamond Gap" Test

Doctors have encouraged people to perform a simple self-check known as the "Diamond Gap Test" or "Schamroth Window Test."

To do this:

  1. Place the nails of your two index fingers against each other.
  2. Hold them together nail-to-nail.
  3. Look for a small diamond-shaped gap between the nail beds.

In healthy individuals, a small diamond-shaped window is usually visible.

If there is no visible gap, it may be a sign of finger clubbing, also known as clubbed fingers—a condition that can sometimes be associated with lung cancer and certain heart diseases.

What Is Finger Clubbing?

According to cancer researchers in the United Kingdom, more than one-third of people with lung cancer may develop finger clubbing.

Among cancers affecting the chest, lung cancer accounts for the majority of clubbing cases.

The condition typically develops gradually:

  • The tissue beneath the nail becomes softer.
  • The skin around the nail appears shinier.
  • The nails begin to curve downward more than normal.
  • Fingertips may become enlarged or bulbous.

Scientists believe this may occur because of increased blood flow and fluid accumulation in the tissues at the fingertips, although the exact mechanism is not fully understood.

Some experts suggest that substances produced by tumors can cause changes in blood vessels and tissues around the nails, leading to swelling and the disappearance of the normal diamond-shaped gap.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Cancer nurse specialist Emma Norton advises that if you perform the test and cannot see a gap between your nails, it is a good idea to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

However, it is important to remember that finger clubbing does not automatically mean you have lung cancer. It can also occur in people with heart disease, chronic lung conditions, liver disease, and other medical disorders.

Other Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Not everyone with lung cancer develops clubbed fingers. Other symptoms that may require medical attention include:

  • A persistent cough that does not go away
  • Changes in a long-standing cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood or blood-stained mucus
  • Chest pain or shoulder pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Ongoing fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

Why Early Detection Matters

Unfortunately, lung cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage because it may not cause obvious symptoms until it has spread within the lungs or to other parts of the body.

As a result, many patients are diagnosed after the cancer has already advanced.

Survival rates vary significantly depending on how early the disease is detected. Early diagnosis and treatment can greatly improve outcomes, making it important to seek medical advice if you notice any persistent or unusual symptoms.

Important Note

The Diamond Gap Test is not a diagnostic tool and cannot determine whether a person has lung cancer. It may only help identify finger clubbing, which is one possible warning sign associated with several medical conditions. Any concerns about lung cancer should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional, who can perform appropriate examinations and tests.
