But after taking a closer look, the shocking truth became clear: it was a fully engorged tick that had been attached to her scalp for days without anyone noticing.
The discovery immediately raised concerns about tick-borne illnesses and highlighted how easily these parasites can remain hidden, especially in thick hair or along the hairline. Many people assume they would quickly notice a tick bite, but in reality, ticks are experts at staying out of sight while feeding.
Ticks are small arachnids that survive by attaching themselves to animals and humans to feed on blood. Before feeding, many species are no larger than a poppy seed, making them extremely difficult to spot. They often hide behind the ears, at the back of the neck, inside the scalp, or along clothing lines where they can remain undisturbed.
As they feed, ticks gradually become larger, sometimes swelling to several times their original size. Because their saliva contains substances that reduce pain and help them stay attached, many bites go completely unnoticed.
One of the biggest concerns is Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted by certain species of ticks. In many cases, the risk of Lyme disease increases when a tick remains attached for approximately 36 to 48 hours or longer. Other infections, including anaplasmosis and babesiosis, may also be transmitted depending on the tick species and geographic region.
After discovering a tick, experts recommend staying calm and removing it properly. Fine-tipped tweezers should be used to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible before pulling upward with slow, steady pressure. Twisting, squeezing, or crushing the tick should be avoided because doing so may increase the chance of leaving mouthparts behind or exposing the wound to infectious material.
The bite area should then be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Saving the tick in a sealed container or plastic bag can also be helpful if medical testing becomes necessary.
Anyone who develops a rash, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, or flu-like symptoms within days or weeks after a tick bite should contact a healthcare professional promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are important if a tick-borne illness is suspected.
Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce the risk of tick bites. Wearing long sleeves and long pants while hiking, staying on marked trails, using EPA-registered insect repellents, and performing full-body tick checks after spending time outdoors can all make a significant difference. Parents should also remember to check children's scalps, behind the ears, and around the neck after outdoor activities, as these are common hiding places.
A simple shower after returning home may also help reveal ticks before they have been attached for long periods, but it should never replace a careful body inspection.
