The article on Eva.vn reports the case of Mrs. Wang, a 60-year-old woman from Lianyungang, China. While cleaning shrimp at home, she accidentally pricked her finger on a shrimp’s head. Initially, she only felt mild pain and continued her work after rinsing the wound.

However, the next day, her finger started swelling and became painful. Two days later, she developed a high fever, and her legs and fingers turned swollen and purplish. Her family rushed her to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with Vibrio vulnificus infection. Despite intensive treatment, Mrs. Wang did not survive.

What is Vibrio vulnificus?

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacteria found in warm seawater, commonly appearing in the summer. It attaches to plankton and shellfish. Humans can get infected in two ways:

  1. Eating contaminated seafood
  2. Exposing open wounds to seawater containing the bacteria

Infections can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, fever, severe sepsis, and tissue necrosis. The mortality rate is over 50% within 48 hours of infection.

How to Prevent Vibrio vulnificus Infection

  • Wear gloves when handling raw seafood.
  • Cook seafood thoroughly, as high temperatures kill the bacteria.
  • Avoid exposing open wounds to seawater or raw seafood.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if you develop a fever or skin inflammation after seafood exposure.

Additionally, it's crucial to monitor water quality and rinse off with clean water after exposure to polluted seawater. šŸšØ
