5 Warning Signs of Appendicitis You Should Never Ignore

Appendicitis is a serious medical condition that occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed, often requiring emergency surgery. If left untreated, it can lead to a life-threatening rupture. Recognizing the early warning signs can help prevent complications and ensure timely medical intervention.
Here are five key symptoms of appendicitis that should never be ignored:
1. Sudden and Intensifying Abdominal Pain
One of the most common and noticeable symptoms of appendicitis is sharp pain that often begins near the belly button and then shifts to the lower right side of the abdomen. The pain usually worsens over a few hours and becomes more intense when you move, cough, or press on the affected area.
2. Nausea and Vomiting
Many people with appendicitis experience nausea, vomiting, or a general loss of appetite. If these symptoms accompany persistent abdominal pain, it could indicate an inflamed appendix rather than a common stomach issue.
3. Fever and Chills
A mild fever (usually around 99-100°F or 37-38°C) is common in the early stages of appendicitis. However, if the appendix ruptures, the infection can spread, leading to a high fever and chills—both signs of a serious complication that requires immediate medical attention.
4. Changes in Bowel Habits
Appendicitis can cause constipation, diarrhea, or difficulty passing gas. Some people may also experience bloating and a feeling of abdominal discomfort that doesn’t go away. These symptoms, when combined with sharp abdominal pain, should not be ignored.
5. Increased Pain with Movement or Pressure
Pain from appendicitis typically worsens when you walk, cough, or apply pressure to the lower right abdomen. A common test doctors use is the "rebound tenderness" test—if pressing the area feels less painful than releasing the pressure, it could be a sign of appendicitis.
When to Seek Medical Help
If you experience any combination of these symptoms—especially worsening pain in the lower right abdomen—seek medical attention immediately. Appendicitis progresses quickly, and delaying treatment can lead to a ruptured appendix, which is a life-threatening emergency.
Early detection can make a huge difference. If in doubt, don’t wait—see a doctor as soon as possible.
