By doing this, wooden kitchen utensils will not get moldy in humid weather

The Risks of Using Moldy Wooden Chopsticks, Spoons, and Cutting Boards

Using chopsticks, spoons, or wooden cutting boards with mold stains can pose serious health risks. In mild cases, it can lead to digestive issues such as diarrhea and vomiting, while in severe cases, it may even cause cancer. Therefore, to protect the health of yourself and your family, it is essential to either discard these items or properly remove mold from them to prevent potential illnesses.

Many homemakers simply wash wooden utensils with dish soap and reuse them. However, this method only removes visible mold stains on the surface and does not effectively eliminate harmful bacteria or mold odors.

How to Properly Remove Mold from Wooden Utensils

At first glance, this may seem like a difficult problem to solve, but with simple ingredients available in your kitchen, you can easily get rid of mold from wooden chopsticks, spoons, and cutting boards.

1. Using Salt

Instructions:

  • Place the moldy utensils in a pot of saltwater and boil for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the utensils, let them cool, and wipe them dry with a clean cloth.
  • Leave them in direct sunlight for at least a day.

Boiling wooden utensils in saltwater helps eliminate unpleasant mold odors and thoroughly disinfects them. Regularly applying this method will keep your wooden utensils clean, bright, and free from mold.

2. Using Baking Soda

Instructions:

  • Mix baking soda with lemon juice to form a thick paste.
  • Evenly apply the mixture to the wooden utensils.
  • Leave them in the sun for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with hot water.

3. Using Lemon

Instructions:

  • Squeeze fresh lemon juice and dilute it with boiling water.
  • Soak the wooden utensils in the lemon water for 15 minutes. If the water cools down, add more boiling water.
  • Remove the utensils and wipe them with a clean cloth.
  • Leave them in direct sunlight to dry.

For cutting boards, rubbing a lemon directly on the surface is an effective way to remove mold odors. You can also use other citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges, or tangerines as alternatives.

4. Using Vinegar

Instructions:

  • Mix one cup of vinegar with a bowl of water.
  • Add a tablespoon of honey and stir well.
  • Soak a soft cloth in the solution, wring it out, and use it to wipe the wooden utensils.
  • Repeat the process twice to restore shine and cleanliness.

Tips for Preventing Mold on Wooden Chopsticks and Utensils

  • When purchasing wooden utensils such as chopsticks, spoons, and plates, choose branded products and avoid cheap or unverified ones.
  • Wash and boil new wooden utensils before use to eliminate any bacteria they may have been exposed to during manufacturing.
  • Wash gently to prevent excessive wear and tear on the outer surface.
  • Always wash wooden utensils with hot water and dry them thoroughly before storing them in a cabinet.
