Doctors Warn Against Eating Rare Beef – Here's Why
Due to his habit of frequently eating rare beef, a 56-year-old man was horrified when doctors removed a tapeworm over 1 meter long that had deeply embedded itself in his body.

Recently, Chợ Rẫy Hospital reported performing an endoscopic procedure to remove a tapeworm, over 1 meter long, from the intestines of a 56-year-old male patient from Đồng Nai Province.
Previously, the patient had visited the hospital complaining of persistent discomfort and indigestion. During examinations, doctors discovered a tapeworm firmly attached to the patient’s intestines. They had to administer a laxative to expel it.
According to the doctors, this type of tapeworm can grow between 2 to 4 meters in length, living in the intestines and causing prolonged anemia, malnutrition, digestive disorders, and abdominal pain.
When investigating his medical history, the patient revealed that he had been eating rare beef since childhood. His preparation method involved squeezing lime and pouring boiling water over the beef without thoroughly cooking it.
While it is undeniable that lightly cooked beef retains its tenderness and rich flavor, making it a favorite dish for many, scientific evidence suggests that this preparation method poses a significant risk of beef tapeworm infection.
The beef tapeworm, scientifically known as Taenia saginata, is a parasitic worm found in cattle intestines. Tapeworm larvae present in undercooked beef can release larvae into the intestines, which may penetrate the intestinal walls and spread throughout the body, causing tissue infections.
Additionally, consuming undercooked beef can lead to liver fluke infections. Liver flukes often inhabit the liver and bile ducts of herbivorous animals like buffalo, cows, and goats. These animals excrete fluke eggs into the environment, where the larvae can thrive. Some flukes live in water, attaching themselves to aquatic plants like water celery or morning glory, or onto meat during unhygienic slaughtering processes.
Once inside the human body, liver flukes can migrate through the intestinal wall to the liver, causing illness. Therefore, if you enjoy eating rare beef, it is recommended to have the meat properly blanched in boiling broth before consumption.
Common symptoms include persistent discomfort, digestive disorders, restlessness, bloating, pain around the navel, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, low blood pressure, and anemia.
Segments of mature tapeworms may detach and exit the digestive tract at any time. They are excreted in feces or crawl out of the anus during activities like bathing or sleeping. These segments can crawl onto bedding, clothing, or other people, causing anxiety and fear in the patient and significantly impacting their physical and mental well-being.
