Growing This One Herb at Home Can Repel Mosquitoes, Clear Bad Energy, Prevent Hair Loss, and Boost Hair Growth

This familiar kitchen herb isn’t just great for cooking — it’s also a natural remedy for hair care and an effective mosquito repellent. In feng shui, boiling lemongrass and ginger for steam cleansing is even believed to ward off negative energy. That’s why more and more households are choosing to grow lemongrass indoors as a multipurpose, decorative plant.

Why You Should Grow Lemongrass at Home

Lemongrass is a common ingredient in many dishes, but it's also a “green living” secret embraced by many families. The plant contains essential oils like citral and geraniol, which have a fresh, pleasant scent known for repelling mosquitoes, calming the nerves, and nourishing the hair and scalp.

According to Dr. Vo Van Chi, lemongrass is a perennial herb that grows in clumps with many branches. The entire plant can be used medicinally, but the stalk holds the highest concentration of essential oil.

Pharmacological studies show that lemongrass contains 1–2% pale yellow essential oil, primarily citral (65–85%) and geraniol (up to 40%). These compounds have antibacterial properties, repel insects, and cleanse the scalp.

In Eastern medicine, lemongrass is considered a valuable medicinal herb. It is used to dispel wind and dampness, release heat from the body, reduce swelling, improve circulation, and prevent insect bites. Nowadays, lemongrass essential oil is used to eliminate unpleasant odors, purify energy, repel flies and mosquitoes, relieve cold symptoms, and help prevent infectious diseases.

One particularly special benefit? Lemongrass helps prevent hair loss. Washing your hair with lemongrass water can reduce hair fall and stimulate faster growth.

How to Use Lemongrass for Hair Care

With just a few simple steps, you can use lemongrass to strengthen and nourish your hair:

  1. Prepare 4–5 lemongrass stalks, wash thoroughly, and crush them.

  2. Boil with about 1 liter of water, then let it cool.

  3. Use this lemongrass water to rinse your hair, gently massaging your scalp for 3–5 minutes.

  4. No need to rinse again with clean water — this helps nutrients absorb better into the scalp.

Use 2–3 times per week consistently to strengthen hair, reduce breakage, and promote hair growth.

How to Easily Grow Lemongrass at Home

Step 1: Select a few fresh lemongrass stalks with roots. Trim the tops, leaving about 15–20 cm of the stalk.

Step 2: Soak the stalks in clean water and place them in a bright, well-ventilated spot like a windowsill or balcony. After about a week, roots and new shoots will appear.

Step 3: Prepare a pot with drainage holes and add 30–35 cm of soil mixed with organic compost. Plant the lemongrass at a 60-degree angle and water thoroughly to help the roots establish.

Step 4: Place the pot where it gets morning sunlight and water daily. In 4–5 months, you can start harvesting your first lemongrass bulbs.

Lemongrass is easy to grow and self-propagates by sprouting baby plants. When harvesting, simply grip the base, twist gently to separate it from the clump, and continue to care for the remaining roots to grow new stalks.

Growing lemongrass at home isn’t just practical — it’s a natural way to enhance your environment, repel insects, promote wellness, and even care for your hair.
