That should have reassured me.
Instead, I found myself becoming even more suspicious.
I tried to tell myself that I was overthinking the situation. There was probably a perfectly ordinary explanation. Maybe water moving across the floor had made the object appear different. Maybe its strange texture was just the result of being wet.
But once the idea that it might be alive had entered my head, it was difficult to dismiss.
Suddenly, I didn't just see an object on the floor.
I saw a mystery.
And the bathroom itself began to feel different.
Suddenly, Every Corner Looked Suspicious
I started looking around for clues.
My eyes went first to the drain.
If this thing really was alive, perhaps that was where it had come from.
I looked around the edges of the shower and then near the toilet. I checked underneath the sink and followed the lines of the pipes with my eyes. I even glanced upward toward the ceiling, as ridiculous as that might sound.
I wanted to understand how something like this could have appeared in an otherwise ordinary bathroom.
Had it crawled from somewhere?
Had it entered through the plumbing?
Had somebody unknowingly carried it inside?
Or had it been there longer than anyone realized?
Then came the question I really didn't want to consider:
What if there were more?
That thought immediately made me uncomfortable.
I started inspecting the room more carefully.
Every shadow seemed darker than it had a few minutes earlier.
Every little mark near the drain deserved a second look.
Every damp corner suddenly seemed like a possible hiding place.
Nothing about the bathroom itself had actually changed, of course. It was still the same familiar room I had entered moments before.
What had changed was my perception of it.
That's one of the strange things about discovering something unexpected in a familiar place. Once your brain recognizes the possibility that something unusual is present, you start seeing the entire environment differently.
A drain is no longer just a drain.
A dark spot isn't necessarily just dirt.
And a damp corner suddenly seems capable of hiding all kinds of surprises.
