That was reassuring.
Still, once you've discovered one strange creature, it's surprisingly difficult to stop searching for another.
Every dark mark caught my attention.
A strand of hair became suspicious until I looked closely.
A tiny piece of debris near the wall suddenly demanded investigation.
Something that would normally have been ignored now seemed potentially important.
The bathroom had transformed into a place I felt compelled to inspect.
Why Bathrooms Can Attract Unexpected Visitors
In hindsight, perhaps finding a strange creature in a bathroom isn't as bizarre as it initially feels.
Bathrooms are unusual environments within a home.
They're regularly exposed to water. Humidity can remain elevated after showers. There are drains, pipes, small gaps, and hidden spaces. Depending on the building, climate, plumbing system, and surrounding environment, those conditions can occasionally attract or support organisms that prefer moisture.
That doesn't mean every mysterious bathroom creature has emerged from the plumbing, nor does finding one automatically indicate an infestation.
There can be many possible explanations.
But bathrooms do have something that many small organisms need: moisture.
This is also why maintaining bathrooms properly can matter.
Keeping floors reasonably dry, cleaning drains, repairing leaks, and checking persistent areas of moisture can make the space less attractive to many unwanted visitors.
In my case, however, I was less interested in bathroom maintenance at that moment than in one simple question:
How had a leech ended up there?
Unfortunately, I never found a completely certain answer.
Leeches Aren't All the Same
My search also taught me something else.
The word "leech" immediately creates a specific image in many people's minds: a dark, slimy creature attaching itself to a person and drinking blood.
But leeches are actually a diverse group.
Not every species feeds on human blood.
Different species have different diets and behaviors. Some prey on other small organisms, while blood-feeding species may use various animals as hosts.
Their bodies are highly flexible, which can also make them difficult to identify at first glance.
A leech can appear short and thick when contracted and considerably longer when extended. That ability to change shape may explain why the creature on the bathroom floor initially looked more like a strange piece of material than an animal.
It wasn't moving in the obvious way I expected a worm to move.
