Identifying the creature answered one question but created several others.
Where had it come from?
Leeches are associated with moist environments, so a bathroom at least offers the damp conditions that might temporarily suit such an animal. But that didn't explain how it had arrived there in the first place.
My first suspicion was the plumbing.
The creature had been found near a damp part of the bathroom, which naturally made me wonder whether it had somehow come from a drain.
But appearances alone couldn't prove that.
There were other possibilities.
Perhaps it had been transported inside accidentally.
People can unknowingly bring small organisms into their homes on wet footwear, clothing, bags, plants, outdoor equipment, or other objects that have been exposed to damp environments.
If someone had recently been near a pond, stream, flooded area, wet garden, or similar environment, a small creature could theoretically hitch a ride without being noticed.
Another possibility was that it had arrived through water associated with the bathroom somehow.
Without knowing the exact species—or the exact route it had taken—there was no way for me to confidently determine the explanation simply by looking at it.
That uncertainty was perhaps the most unsettling part.
If you know exactly how something entered your home, you can usually prevent it from happening again.
If you don't know, your imagination fills in the gaps.
The Question I Didn't Want to Ask
Once I started thinking about how it got there, another question became unavoidable.
Was it alone?
Finding one unexpected creature is strange.
Finding one creature that might have come from an unknown source makes you wonder whether others could have followed the same route.
So I checked the bathroom again.
This time, I was far more thorough.
I inspected the area around the drain.
I checked the floor around the toilet.
I looked along the walls, especially where moisture could collect.
I examined the area underneath the sink.
I checked near pipes and corners.
Nothing else appeared to be moving.
