Is Right Eye Twitching a Bad Omen and Left Eye Twitching a Good One? An Ophthalmologist Reveals the Truth

Doctors say the truth might surprise you.

Is Right Eye Twitching a Bad Omen and Left Eye Twitching a Good One? An Ophthalmologist Reveals the Truth

According to folk beliefs in many places, a twitching left eye is a sign of good luck or incoming fortune, while a twitching right eye is often seen as a bad omen. However, from a medical perspective, this phenomenon has nothing to do with predicting the future and is usually caused by physiological factors.

A Man Experienced Right Eye Twitching for Three Weeks

Recently, China Times reported the case of a man in his 60s, surnamed Chen, who experienced persistent twitching in his right eye for three weeks. The twitching occurred frequently and gradually became stronger throughout the day.

At first, he thought it might be a “bad omen” according to traditional beliefs. However, as the condition continued, he became worried that it could be a warning sign of a stroke and decided to visit a hospital for a check-up.

Doctors at Changhua Christian Hospital (Taiwan) examined him and found that his intraocular pressure was normal. Key eye structures such as the cornea, retina, and optic nerve showed no abnormalities, and conditions like glaucoma were ruled out.

In the end, doctors concluded that his eyelid twitching was not caused by a serious disease. Instead, it was mainly related to an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system. With sufficient rest and lifestyle adjustments, the symptoms were expected to gradually improve.

The Spiritual Meaning Behind Eye Twitching: Sign of Good Luck or a Warning?

The Real Causes of Eyelid Twitching

Ophthalmologist Dr. Nian Zhan-Wei explained that persistent eyelid twitching is medically known as blepharospasm.

This occurs when the circular muscles around the eye are stimulated by nerves and contract involuntarily. In most cases, it is harmless and linked to everyday lifestyle factors.

Common triggers include:

  • Staying up late

  • Prolonged stress

  • Mental pressure

  • Looking at screens for too long

  • Consuming too much caffeine

These factors can disrupt the autonomic nervous system, causing repeated contractions of the eye muscles.

Dr. Nian noted that cases like Mr. Chen’s are not uncommon. Some patients even experience eyelid twitching continuously for one to two months. In most situations, improving lifestyle habits—such as reducing stress, limiting stimulants, and getting enough rest—can help the symptoms disappear over time.

When Can Eye Twitching Be Dangerous?

According to the doctor, eyelid twitching is rarely a sign of stroke, so people should not panic. However, the symptom should not be ignored if it persists for a long time.

If eyelid twitching occurs along with other symptoms such as:

  • Blurred vision

  • Eye pain

  • Headaches

  • Weakness in the arms or legs

  • Difficulty speaking

then it may indicate a more serious problem related to the brain or nervous system. In such cases, people should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
