Many people have done wrong without knowing it

Common Air Fryer Mistakes That Could Cause Food Poi.soning

The air fryer has gained immense popularity in kitchens worldwide due to its convenience and healthier cooking method. However, improper use of this appliance can increase the ri.sk of foodborne illnesses.

Nutrition specialist Nicola Shubrook explains that an air fryer cooks food by circulating hot air around it, resulting in crispy textures with less oil compared to traditional frying methods. It’s perfect for preparing items like fries and chicken wings.

Despite its benefits, there are important safety precautions to follow to prevent food poisoning.

One of the most frequent errors is neglecting to clean the air fryer between uses. This habit can jeopardize your health.

For instance, if raw or undercooked chicken contaminated with salmonella is cooked and the fryer isn’t cleaned afterward, bacteria can linger and contaminate subsequent meals. Salmonella bacteria are resilient and can survive on dry surfaces for up to 32 hours.

Candess Zona-Mendola, a food safety editor, emphasizes that using a dirty air fryer greatly raises the chances of cross-contamination.

Food safety expert Janilyn Hutchings also points out that leftover crumbs and bacteria build up if the fryer is not cleaned regularly, which compromises the safety of the next batch of food.

“Cleaning your fryer after every use is essential,” says Candess. “While it might seem like a chore, it’s actually quite straightforward. Using warm water and dish soap makes the job easier.”

She adds, “Allowing the fryer to soak briefly reduces the need for vigorous scrubbing. Just a few minutes of effort keeps your appliance hygienic and your kitchen smelling fresh.”

Remember to avoid abrasive tools that could scratch the fryer’s non-stick coating during cleaning.

Other common air fryer mistakes include:

1.  Skipping Preheating

All air fryer manuals recommend preheating for 3-5 minutes before cooking. This ensures the device reaches the proper temperature, resulting in better cooked food.

2.  Overloading the Basket

Air fryers cook by circulating hot air, so packing the basket too full blocks airflow, causing uneven cooking and less crispy results.

3.  Putting Wet Food Directly into the Fryer

Moist food will steam rather than crisp. Pat your ingredients dry with a paper towel before cooking. Also, avoid frying batter-coated foods in an air fryer; traditional frying yields better textures.

4.  Improper Use of Aluminum Foil

While lining the bottom of the basket with foil is acceptable, covering the top or wrapping food too tightly blocks airflow, leading to uneven cooking and longer cook times.

5.  Neglecting to Check Food Midway

Most air fryers don’t have transparent lids, so it’s easy to forget to monitor food. Checking halfway through cooking, shaking or flipping food, helps prevent burning and ensures even cooking.

6.  Cooking Highly Acidic Foods

Avoid cooking acidic items like lemons, vinegar, or sour fruits in an air fryer lined with foil. Acid can react with aluminum, potentially contaminating your food with aluminum particles, which is unsafe.

By avoiding these mistakes and maintaining good cleaning habits, you can enjoy delicious, safe meals from your air fryer every time.
