Mistake #5: Almost everyone makes it—but few actually notice

Refrigerators Can Explode After Long-Term Use If You're Not Careful

A refrigerator that has been in use for a long time can experience certain issues that may lead to an explosion. If the user isn’t paying attention, it can become extremely dangerous.

1. Compressor Runs Continuously Without Shutting Off

A continuously running compressor may be caused by a lack of refrigerant gas or an overcharge; high ambient temperatures forcing the fridge to work harder to cool; a faulty thermostat; the internal light staying on constantly; or frequent door openings.

Additionally, this issue may arise due to poor airflow around the fridge for heat dissipation, blocked ventilation paths, a damaged or loose door seal, or overloading the fridge with too much food.

2. Strange Noises Coming from the Compressor

Larger refrigerators with higher capacity typically produce louder operational sounds than smaller units. However, if you hear the following unusual noises, you should take notice:

  • A popping or thudding sound followed by a shutdown: This could be due to loose screws on the cooling unit. To fix this, unplug the fridge, remove the screws, add washers or padding, then retighten them.

  • A buzzing or vibrating sound ("re re"): This is usually caused by parts vibrating against each other. Check whether the compressor mounting pins have slipped or become misaligned. If so, secure them properly.

3. Excessive Heat on Both Sides of the Fridge

Placing the fridge in a tight space, too close to a wall, or surrounded by objects can hinder heat dissipation, causing the sides of the fridge to become very hot.

The condenser coils of a refrigerator are often located on both sides. When the fridge runs, the refrigerant circulates through these coils, releasing heat to the outside and making the sides hot. If there isn’t enough space for the heat to escape, it can lead to overheating or even an explosion.

4. Smelling Gas Near the Refrigerator

A gas leak or low refrigerant level can prevent the fridge from cooling properly. If you notice this, contact a service center or an electronics repair shop to recharge the gas. If this issue is not addressed in time, it may cause the refrigerator to catch fire or explode.

Important Safety Tips When Using a Refrigerator

  • Do not place the fridge next to a cooking stove. Putting it near an open flame is like installing a time bomb in your home. Always keep a distance of 10–15 cm between the fridge and the wall. Avoid placing it where it’s exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Avoid placing the fridge near heat sources like gas tanks, microwaves, ovens, generators, or any other electrically conductive appliances, as they pose a high fire risk.

  • Keep the fridge away from damp or wet areas to prevent the gas cylinder casing from rusting, which could lead to gas leakage.

  • Avoid storing items on top of the refrigerator.

  • Avoid placing glass bottles containing alcohol or carbonated drinks in the freezer, as they can easily explode.
