“What did you say?”

“The young woman we found may be Emily. We need you to come to the station so we can confirm her identity.”

Sarah's knees weakened. She lowered herself into a chair, pressing one hand against her mouth.

“Is she alive?”

There was a brief silence.

“Yes,” the investigator said gently. “She is alive.”

The words seemed to arrive from another world.

Sarah began crying, but the tears brought no immediate relief. Her hands trembled so violently that she could barely hold the telephone. She asked the same question three times, as if repeating it might protect the answer from disappearing.

Then she called Emily's father.

He was silent for several seconds after she told him.

Finally, he whispered, “After all this time?”

Neither of them knew what to do next.

Seven years of grief had prepared them for loss, not for the return of the child they had mourned without ever knowing whether mourning was justified.

They drove to the police station without turning on the radio.

Outside, the sky was gray. People went about their ordinary routines, buying coffee and walking to work, unaware that a family's entire world was about to change.

Inside the station, an investigator explained that a young woman had come to the attention of authorities during an unrelated inquiry. Details were limited while officials worked to establish her identity and understand what had happened.
