The confirmation process took several hours.

When the investigator finally returned, she carried a photograph.

Sarah recognized the eyes first.

They were older now, shadowed by experiences her mother could not imagine. The round cheeks had changed. The little girl in the faded missing-person poster had become a young woman.

But those eyes were Emily's.

DNA testing later confirmed the identity.

The child who had vanished seven years earlier had been found alive.

A Reunion Without Easy Answers

Sarah had imagined this moment thousands of times.

She had pictured Emily running into her arms, calling her Mom, and crying against her shoulder. She had imagined holding her daughter so tightly that no force in the world could ever separate them again.

But when she entered the quiet room where Emily was waiting, reality was different.

Emily stood beside a chair, her hands folded in front of her. She looked frightened and uncertain. Her eyes moved from Sarah's face to the floor, then back again.

Sarah stopped several steps away.

“Emily?”

The young woman did not answer immediately.
