Washing Machine Shaking Like It’s About to Jump? I Used to Panic, Now I Fix It Myself!

If your washing machine shakes violently, don’t worry—you can fix it yourself with these five simple tricks!

I once faced the issue of an excessively shaking washing machine and immediately searched online for solutions. Some people said it was a loose belt, others blamed a faulty shock absorber, and some even suggested replacing the motor or bearings. Back then, I panicked and called a repair technician right away.

Luckily, the technician was honest and explained that a shaking washing machine is usually caused by five common reasons—most of which can be fixed easily at home, without spending money on repairs. Here’s what he shared with me. I’ve used these tips multiple times, and they’ve worked every time. Try them out!

1. Forgot to Remove the Transit Bolts

If your brand-new washing machine is shaking violently, check if the transit bolts have been removed.

These four large bolts at the back of the machine are used to secure the drum during transport, preventing damage to the bearings. However, if they are not removed before use, the drum won’t spin freely, causing the entire machine to shake.

Tip from the technician: Keep these bolts after removal. If you ever move house, you can reinstall them to prevent damage during transport.

2. Uneven Machine Legs

The first time my machine shook, the technician gently pushed the top of the washer—and it wobbled instantly. That’s when I realized it wasn’t standing evenly.

For a washing machine to operate smoothly and without vibration, it needs to be perfectly level. If you look at the front bottom section, you’ll find adjustable feet. Simply turn them slightly to balance the machine, and the shaking will stop.

Tip from the technician: Over time, the legs may shift, causing instability. Check them regularly to prevent excessive shaking.

3. Clothes Are Not Evenly Distributed

After adjusting the legs, I tested the machine with a load of laundry. But the technician stopped me—I was loading clothes incorrectly the whole time!

I used to stuff as many clothes as possible into the drum, even pressing them down. Big mistake! When clothes are packed too tightly, they clump together and cause the drum to spin unevenly, making the machine shake violently.

The right way to load laundry:

  • Loosely place clothes in the drum so they have room to move.
  • For large items like jackets, blankets, or curtains, fold them neatly before placing them inside. This prevents imbalance, ensures even water distribution, and improves cleaning efficiency.

4. Not Enough Space Around the Machine

Many people install their washing machines inside tight cabinets to make the space look neat. But this setup can cause problems.

At first glance, fitting the machine snugly inside a cabinet seems like a great idea. But washing machines always vibrate slightly when running. If there’s not enough clearance, the machine will constantly hit the sides of the cabinet, leading to:

  • Increased shaking over time
  • Potential damage to both the cabinet and the machine

Solution: The user manual always specifies the required clearance around the machine. Follow these guidelines, or even leave a bit more space. If you ever need to replace your washing machine, you’ll have more flexibility in size selection.

5. Clogged Drain Hose

Washing machines typically have two types of drainage systems:

  • Top drainage: Uses a pump and a secured hose—less prone to clogging.
  • Bottom drainage: Relies on gravity, making it more likely to clog.

If the bottom drain hose gets clogged, dirty water can’t drain properly. The machine then spins at high speed with excess water inside, making it shake like crazy.

How to fix it:

  • If your washer is shaking abnormally, check the drain hose immediately.
  • Use a long wire or drain cleaner tool to remove any debris.
  • Make sure the hose is angled downward for smooth water flow—avoid kinks or upward bends, as these slow drainage.

By following these simple DIY fixes, I’ve saved money and avoided unnecessary repairs. So next time your washing machine starts dancing across the room, try these tricks before calling for help. Which one worked for you?
