When buying bananas, if you see these 4 types, walk away immediately without hesitation!

Not every type of banana is worth buying. If you come across these 4 kinds while shopping, turn around and leave—even if the seller offers them at a surprisingly low price.

As we all know, bananas are nutritious and delicious. Eating them regularly can help relieve constipation and improve skin health. Moreover, bananas are relatively affordable, making them accessible to almost everyone. That’s why they naturally become a top choice for many households. However, not all bananas are good to eat.

Below are 4 types of bananas you should never buy:

1. Bananas with Rotten Stems

Frequent banana buyers often encounter bananas with rotting stems. To sell these quickly, vendors usually price them lower than normal bananas. Some bargain-hunters buy them without hesitation, assuming that only the stem is rotten and it won’t affect the fruit.
In reality, once the stem rots, bacteria multiply rapidly. These bacteria can penetrate the banana flesh through the peel, posing risks to your health.

2. Bananas with an Alcohol Smell

Have you ever noticed that some bananas give off a faint alcoholic odor after you bring them home? There are two reasons for this:

  • During natural ripening, starch in bananas is converted into sugar. Over time, the sugar reacts with acidic substances and gradually ferments into alcohol.

  • Alternatively, bananas may be corroded by microorganisms. Since bananas are rich in fructose, when microbes break it down, ethanol is produced, creating an alcohol-like smell.

Even though we know the reason, that doesn’t mean such bananas are safe to eat. If you have bananas with this smell at home, discard them immediately to avoid health risks.

3. Bananas with Black Spots on the Peel

Because bananas have a short shelf life, after sitting at room temperature for a few days, black spots often appear on their skin. Some people believe these spots are harmless and only make the fruit taste sweeter and softer. In fact, at a certain stage, black spots do indicate peak ripeness.

However, not all bananas with black spots are safe to eat. If the spots increase significantly and the flesh inside turns black and mushy, the banana is spoiled. Eating it may damage your digestive system and even cause food poisoning. For your health, it’s best to eat bananas while they’re still fresh.

4. Bananas with Cracked Skin

Some people assume that when the skin cracks, the fruit is perfectly ripe and tastier than regular bananas. But this isn’t always true. Cracks on the surface may not be a natural sign of ripening; they could be caused by high temperature and humidity or artificial ripening methods.

When the skin cracks, bacteria and harmful substances can easily enter and damage the banana flesh. Eating such bananas frequently is harmful to your health.
