Don't Just Use Plain Water for Flower Arrangements: Follow This Method to Keep Flowers Fresh for a Week

To keep your flowers fresh for an extended time, simply add a few basic ingredients to the water.

Choose Fresh Flowers

One of the key secrets to long-lasting flowers is selecting freshly cut blooms. Look for flowers with intact stems and leaves. Choose those that haven’t fully bloomed yet, as they tend to last longer. Avoid flowers that are already fully opened with soft petals, as they won’t stay fresh for long.

Inspect the cut at the base of the stem. A fresh cut appears light in color, while darkened cuts indicate older flowers.

Different types of flowers have varying bloom durations. For a longer-lasting bouquet, opt for hardy varieties like chrysanthemums, roses, or lilies.

Clean the Vase Before Arranging

Always wash the vase thoroughly before arranging flowers. An unclean vase may harbor bacteria from previous arrangements, which can cause the flowers to wilt more quickly. Use clean water for the arrangement.
Trim the Stems

When arranging flowers, use sharp scissors or a knife to cut the stems diagonally at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption, helping the flowers stay hydrated.

For better results, soak the stems in water for about 5 minutes before placing them in the vase. Also, remove excess leaves below the waterline, as submerged leaves can rot quickly and shorten the flowers’ lifespan.

Change the Water Regularly

Replace the water in the vase frequently to keep the flowers fresh. Each time you change the water, trim a small portion of the stem’s base to enhance water absorption.

Use Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 helps flowers absorb and retain water better, keeping them fresh for a longer time. Crush a Vitamin B1 tablet and dissolve it in 1 liter of water. Use this mixture to fill the vase. Prepare fresh B1 water every time you change the water for the flowers.
