3 Common Household Items Loaded with Toxins: Many Families Use Them Daily Without Realizing the Danger
These are three very common items found in most households. According to health experts, they should be thrown out immediately to avoid potential health risks.
Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-educated gastroenterologist with over 473,000 TikTok followers, recently spoke with the UK newspaper Express. In the interview, he revealed three harmful household items that can negatively affect your health—and urged people to stop using them right away.
1. Scented Candles
Dr. Sethi warns that scented candles can be particularly dangerous.
“These candles often contain phthalates, which can disrupt your hormones,” he said.
According to Express, phthalates are commonly used to prolong fragrance and improve the flexibility of plastics and candle wax. They’re also found in personal care products, household items, medical devices, and food packaging.
Phthalates can interfere with the endocrine system, mimicking or blocking hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. This can lead to reproductive issues like reduced sperm quality and early puberty. Some types, like DEHP and DBP, are linked to birth defects and miscarriages.
Inhaling too many phthalates can also lead to asthma, allergies, and weakened immune function. Animal studies suggest that certain phthalates may promote cancer growth.
Dr. Sethi recommends using unscented candles or those made from natural ingredients like soy or beeswax instead.
2. Plastic Cutting Boards
Plastic cutting boards are prone to warping, scratching, and cannot withstand heavy impact or high temperatures like wooden boards.
“These plastic boards can release microplastics into your food,” Dr. Sethi said.
Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5mm. According to Health magazine, they can cause inflammation, cellular damage, DNA disruption, and organ dysfunction. Microplastics can accumulate in the intestines, blood, and brain—potentially increasing the risk of heart disease, gut inflammation, and metabolic disorders. They may also harm fertility and the nervous system.
“It’s safer to use wooden cutting boards to minimize health risks,” Dr. Sethi advises.
3. Scratched Non-Stick Pans

Dr. Sethi warns:
“Using non-stick pans that are scratched or chipped can release PFAS into your food. These chemicals can accumulate in the body and may lead to high blood pressure, increased cholesterol, and reproductive issues.”
PFAS, short for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, are a group of over 10,000 man-made chemicals used in heat-, water-, and oil-resistant products. They’re often called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment or the human body, Express reports.
Health problems linked to PFAS include thyroid disorders, developmental delays in children, hormonal imbalances, kidney and testicular cancers, liver damage, immune suppression, preeclampsia, and more.
Dr. Sethi recommends replacing scratched non-stick pans with new ones immediately.
“You can also opt for safer cookware materials like stainless steel or cast iron,” he added.
Conclusion: These everyday items may seem harmless but could pose serious health risks over time. Making small changes in your kitchen and home can help reduce exposure to hidden toxins and protect your long-term health.
