4 warning signs that frozen meat has spoiled

When placed in the freezer, meat can be stored for many days without fear of spoilage. When it's time to eat, we just need to defrost and process it. But in some cases, meat can still spoil. If you accidentally eat spoiled meat, you can easily get food poisoning.
There are many reasons why meat can still spoil even though it's in the freezer. For example, for some reason you're away from home and the power goes out for many hours. The temperature in the freezer gradually increases and can cause the meat to spoil, according to the health website Healthline (USA).
Unlike fresh meat that is red, spoiled meat will be pale and slimy on the surface due to the effects of bacteria
Spoiled frozen meat can be contaminated with Salmonella or E.coli bacteria, leading to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. In some serious cases, food poisoning can even be fatal. If frozen meat is spoiled, it will have the following signs:
1. The surface of the meat changes color
Spoiling meat will have a very different color than fresh meat. For example, red meats such as pork and beef will have a red color. We will also see pink-red liquid flowing from the meat. In fact, it is not blood but myoglobin in the meat.
Myoglobin exposed to air for a long time will oxidize and become darker, even dull brown. If not preserved properly, the meat will begin to turn gray or green. At this point, the meat is no longer edible.
2. Starts to have a strange smell
A strange smell is a sign that the meat has spoiled and is no longer edible. This smell is often compared to the smell of ammonia and a little bit of sulfur.
In fact, frozen meat will have less active enzymes than fresh meat. This is what contributes to the fact that frozen meat has less odor. Therefore, if frozen meat has a strange smell, it should be thrown away.

3. The texture of the meat looks slimy
A piece of spoiled meat will no longer have its usual brightness but will have a sticky and slimy surface. This slime is a product of bacteria on the surface of the meat. The activity of bacteria is also the cause of the unpleasant smell.
4. Cooked meat tastes very bad
In fact, there are cases where the signs of spoiled meat are not obvious, causing us to not realize it and still cook the meat. However, spoiled meat when cooked tastes very bad, has a strange smell and sometimes tastes sour, according to Healthline.
