Doctors warn that these 6 oils should be limited, because if consumed in excess, it can increase the risk of colorectal cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer

In the daily diets of most people, cooking oils such as canola oil and sunflower oil are commonly used. However, Dr. Liao Zhiying, a radiation oncology specialist in Taiwan (China), warns that six types of oils should be limited because excessive consumption may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.

On his personal page, Dr. Liao, who works at a hospital affiliated with China Medical University, explained that fatty acids like Omega-3, Omega-6, and Omega-9 in oils provide energy and help cell development. They also aid the body in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), form cell membranes and hormones, thereby maintaining normal physiological functions and emotional balance.

Omega-6 in oils may stimulate cancer cell growth

Citing recent studies, Dr. Liao said that in animal experiments, Omega-6 was found to activate mTORC1, a pathway promoting the growth of triple-negative breast cancer, and can also stimulate the proliferation of prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer cells.

He pointed out that modern diets tend to consume large amounts of meat, sesame oil, soybean salad oil, and sunflower oil, all rich in saturated fatty acids and Omega-6, while the intake of Omega-9 (found in tea seed oil, olive oil) is relatively low; even more seriously, there is a deficiency of Omega-3, which is abundant in flaxseed oil, fish oil, seeds, and nuts. He emphasized that Omega-3 and Omega-9 have significantly better anti-inflammatory effects.

List of recommended cooking oils

High-quality cooking oils rich in Omega-3 and Omega-9 with anti-inflammatory effects:

  • High in Omega-3: Canola oil, flaxseed oil, perilla oil.

  • High in Omega-9: Olive oil, avocado oil, tea seed oil. These are suitable for daily cooking. For high-temperature frying, avocado oil or tea seed oil is recommended.

Moderate cooking oil:

  • Rice bran oil.

Oils to limit due to high Omega-6 content:

  • Soybean oil.

  • Peanut oil.

  • Corn oil.

  • Sunflower oil.

  • Grape seed oil.

  • Pumpkin seed oil.

Additionally, pork fat and coconut oil, due to their high saturated fat content, should not be used frequently.
