Don't underestimate it
Warning Signs of Oral Cancer You Should Never Ignore
Oral cancer can often be overlooked in its early stages, but recognizing the signs and seeking early medical attention is essential for successful treatment. Some early signs might appear in seemingly unrelated areas, such as the skin or soft tissues around the mouth and neck. Here are some warning signs of oral cancer to watch for:
1. Persistent Mouth Sores
One of the most common symptoms of oral cancer is persistent sores in the mouth that do not heal. These sores can appear on the gums, tongue, or inside the cheeks and may be painful or bleed. If a sore in the mouth lasts for more than two weeks without healing, it's important to get it checked by a healthcare provider.
2. Unexplained Pain or Tenderness
Oral cancer can cause pain or tenderness in the mouth, neck, or ear. If you experience pain when swallowing, chewing, or moving your tongue, it could be an early sign of oral cancer.
3. Changes in the Skin Around the Mouth
In the image, there appears to be abnormal skin pigmentation or texture around the neck. A similar change can occur around the mouth or lips, such as a darker patch of skin or rough, thickened areas. These skin changes might indicate the presence of oral cancer or another related condition.
4. Lump or Thickening in the Mouth or Neck
A noticeable lump or thickening of tissue inside the mouth or around the neck can be a sign of cancerous growth. Swelling, or a feeling of something being stuck in the throat, could indicate the spread of cancer to nearby tissues.
5. Difficulty Moving the Jaw or Mouth
Oral cancer may cause difficulty in moving your mouth or jaw. This could include difficulty opening your mouth fully or trouble swallowing. If the muscles or tissues in the jaw or mouth become stiff or painful, it may signal a problem that needs medical attention.
6. Bleeding Without Cause
If you notice any unexplained bleeding in your mouth or throat, this should never be ignored. Bleeding gums, or blood when brushing or eating, can sometimes indicate an underlying oral issue, such as cancer.
7. Persistent Hoarseness or Sore Throat
A persistent sore throat or hoarseness that doesn't go away, especially when accompanied by pain in the throat or neck, may be a sign of cancer in the throat or larynx, which are connected to oral cancer.
8. Numbness or Loss of Feeling
If you experience numbness or a loss of feeling in the mouth, lips, or tongue, it can indicate that the cancer has affected the nerves in the region. This is a serious symptom that requires immediate attention.
What to Do If You Experience These Symptoms
If you notice any of these symptoms, especially if they last for more than two weeks, you should visit a healthcare professional for an examination. Early detection of oral cancer increases the chances of successful treatment, so don't wait to seek help.
