Flight Attendant Reveals the "Golden Time" to Use the Airplane Bathroom—And It’s Not What You Expect!

A former flight attendant shares expert advice on the best times to use the airplane restroom for maximum comfort and privacy.

Using a public restroom is never the most pleasant experience, especially on an airplane, where the space is tight, and there’s often a line. If you want to avoid the hassle and find the perfect moment to "relieve yourself," a former flight attendant has revealed the "golden time" to head to the lavatory.

The Two Best Times to Use the Airplane Restroom

According to Erika Roth, a former flight attendant with years of experience, there are two ideal moments to use the airplane bathroom:

  1. Right after the seatbelt sign is turned off – Most passengers are still settling in and unlikely to rush to the restroom at this time.
  2. When flight attendants start the drink service – At this moment, most passengers are focused on selecting their beverages and are unlikely to get up and use the bathroom. Some may feel the need to go but will hold off to avoid missing their favorite drink.

If you take advantage of these time slots, you’ll have about ten minutes of peace and quiet to use the restroom without waiting in line.

Dealing With Odors in the Airplane Restroom

Aside from timing, odor control is another factor to consider. Given the tight space on an airplane, unpleasant smells can quickly spread beyond the restroom.

In fact, in 2015, a British airline had to turn back mid-flight because a strong odor from the lavatory made passengers feel unwell!

Flight attendants even have the authority to ask passengers to leave the restroom if they create an overwhelming smell or take too long, as this can inconvenience other passengers. If you ever find yourself stuck inside, don’t worry—there’s an emergency switch that alerts the crew, allowing them to unlock the door from the outside.

How to Minimize Odors in an Airplane Restroom

One simple trick is to ask a flight attendant for a small packet of coffee before using the restroom. Hanging a coffee packet inside can help neutralize unpleasant smells and make the experience more bearable for the next person.

How to Properly Use an Airplane Restroom

Using an airplane restroom is slightly different from a regular bathroom. If it’s your first time, here are a few important tips to remember:

  • Read the instructions inside – Airplane bathrooms have clear guidelines posted inside.
  • Flush properly – The flush button is usually on the right side of the toilet and may have an icon of a hand, finger, or the word "Push."
  • Close the toilet lid before flushing – The vacuum flush system is powerful, so always close the lid before pressing the button.
  • Use the sink properly – To wash your hands, simply press the small knob next to the sink for water to flow.
  • Dry your hands – Paper towels are typically available on the wall near the sink.

By following these tips, you can make your trip to the airplane restroom as smooth and hassle-free as possible!
