The Magic of Orange Peels: Eco-Friendly and Economical Household Tips

Oranges are among the most consumed fruits during winter. But what about the part we don’t eat: the peel? Throwing it away is a waste, as it can still be useful. Plus, it smells great. Here are some tips from my grandmother on how to repurpose orange peels at home in easy and economical ways.

1. Household Cleaning Solution with Orange Peels

Have you ever noticed the pleasant fragrance released when peeling oranges? This is due to the oils in the zest, which contain hundreds of tiny reservoirs that release aromatic oils when bent or torn. Soaking these peels in a bottle of white vinegar is an excellent way to harness this natural fragrance. The vinegar absorbs the scent, making your cleaning solution smell pleasant, which is a welcome change from the strong odor of plain vinegar. This method also works with other citrus fruits like lemons, grapefruits, or bergamots.

2. Flavoring Drinks Naturally

Similarly, orange peels can be used to flavor drinks. For this, it’s best to use organic orange zests. Adding them to water or in a flask for work can give a delightful flavor, especially for those who don’t enjoy plain water. This natural aroma is sugar-free and much healthier than artificial flavors.

3. Enhancing Loose Leaf Tea

A trick I learned from my grandmother is to cut orange peel into small dice and add them to a tightly sealed container of black loose leaf tea. After a few days, the tea develops a pleasant orange flavor. For a gourmet twist, add some bergamot zest as well. If you’re in a hurry, simply steeping organic orange peels in hot tea can achieve the same flavorful result.

4. Natural Home Deodorizer

Both fresh and dried orange peels are effective in making the house smell good. Slice the peels and place them in a bowl in any room you wish to deodorize. The scent lasts about a week and can be enhanced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, or mint. Another method is to simmer orange zest in a pot of hot water, spreading a delightful fragrance throughout the kitchen, similar to a potpourri.

Additional Tips and Uses

  • Skin Care: Orange peels contain antioxidants and can be dried, ground, and used in homemade face masks.
  • Garden Compost: Add orange peels to compost bins for a nutrient-rich garden compost.
  • Furniture Polish: Oils in orange peels can be used to polish and shine wooden furniture.
