Useful tips for phones when they get wet
Although rice is known for its moisture-absorbing properties, using it to "rescue" a water-dam.aged phone is a mistake. No matter how careful we are, accidents happen - our phones may get wet from being dropped in water or caught in the rain. When exposed to water, phones can experience issues like unresponsive touchscreens, distorted audio, SIM card failure, or even complete shutdown.
As a reflex, many people immediately place their wet phones in a container of rice to absorb moisture and prevent further damage. This practice has become common, but in reality, it is entirely ineffective and can even harm your device.
Why You Shouldn’t Bury Your Wet Phone in Rice
Although rice can absorb moisture, using it as a quick fix for a water-damaged phone is a mistake. Research from reputable institutions like the University of Colorado has shown that when a phone is buried in rice, tiny rice particles and dust can seep into its crevices, blocking the charging port, speakers, headphone jack, and internal components.
Removing these particles is time-consuming and sometimes impossible, leading to further damage. Moreover, placing a wet phone in rice does not guarantee that all internal moisture will be effectively removed.
What Should You Do If Your Phone Gets Wet?
1. Turn off the device immediately and unplug it if it’s charging. If the phone is powered on, water can short-circuit the internal components, causing irreversible damage.2. Remove the phone case, SIM card, and memory card, then gently pat them dry with a soft cloth or tissue. Do not rub forcefully, as this may push water further into the device.
3. Hold the phone with the charging port facing downward and gently tap it to help drain excess water.
4. Place the phone in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid using a hairdryer or exposing it to direct sunlight, as excessive heat may cause further damage.
5. If available, place silica gel packets (moisture absorbers) near the phone to help absorb excess moisture.
When to Seek Professional Help
- If the phone was submerged in water for an extended period, especially in a pool or seawater, internal corrosion may occur.
- If the phone still doesn’t work properly after drying, take it to a professional technician for inspection and repair.
- To prevent water damage in the future, use a waterproof case or plastic bag when swimming, going to the beach, or walking in the rain.
By following these correct steps instead of relying on the rice myth, you can increase the chances of saving your wet phone and preventing further dam.age!
